Seoul-based animator and motion designer Kim Soobin has officially made her debut on Stash with Together, a poignant and imaginative personal short film that tackles the age-old philosophical conundrum of the mind-body problem. Rather than approaching this complex psychological and metaphysical subject through dense academic discourse, Kim translates the inquiry into the delightful, tactile style and gentle whimsy of a children’s storybook.

The film explores the fundamental partnership between human consciousness and physical existence, stripping away pretense to present a relatable visual allegory. "We often see the mind as the part of us that thinks and makes decisions, while the body grounds us in the physical world," Kim explains, shedding light on the conceptual foundation of her latest work. "This project does not place one above the other. The balloon represents the mind, while the body represents the physical self. They play different roles, but together, they become whole."

This central thesis drives the narrative arc of the short film, utilizing clever visual metaphors to demonstrate how two distinct elements must collaborate to navigate existence. The mind, symbolized by a buoyant, expressive balloon bearing a cheerful face, possesses lightness, adaptability, and vision. Meanwhile, the body serves as the anchor, interacting with the tactile environments and heavy textures of the physical realm.

To bring the balloon character to life and authentically capture its unique physical properties, Kim relied on three core principles of classical animation expression: squash and stretch, bouncing movements, and a vibrant color variety. Deliberate changes in shape combined with lively, elastic bouncing emphasize the lightness and buoyant nature of the mind-space. At the same time, the strategic introduction of varied colors enhances the visual engagement, ensuring that the character maintains a playful and distinct personality throughout its journey across the screen.

Beyond character animation, the overarching atmosphere of Together was meticulously crafted to evoke the cozy, nostalgic feeling of turning the pages of an illustrated storybook. To achieve this distinct aesthetic, Kim implemented a three-tiered visual approach involving horizontal and vertical scrolling, playful secondary elements, and hand-drawn aesthetics. The seamless scrolling motion acts as a narrative guide, steering the viewer steadily through the unfolding scenes. This is complemented by whimsical items such as small toys and stickers scattered throughout the frame, injecting layers of visual interest and tactile richness. Furthermore, expressive drawings capture a wide range of shifting moods and emotional states, effectively transforming the viewing experience into a journey through a living, breathing children’s book.

The project’s distinct visual style is thoroughly documented across several standout frames from the film. In one striking composition, a tiny, headless figure stands upon a cluttered wooden floor, reaching upward toward a small, smiling orange ball floating gracefully in mid-air. Another frame showcases a meticulous cardboard diorama featuring a small house resting on a rugged rock face, with a climbing figure scaling a tower nearby while a large red balloon with a cartoonish face looms ominously yet charmingly in the background.

Additional scenes transport the viewer into surreal, mixed-media environments. One shot places the headless cartoon character, dressed simply in a white shirt and shorts, inside an industrial space framed by metallic pipes, standing face-to-face with a small, cheerful red sphere resting upon a pedestal. Another memorable composition depicts the same character floating weightlessly through a dreamlike sunset sky, clutching a single orange balloon while surrounded by a multitude of colorful balloons drifting into the horizon. Finally, a tactile frame highlights the film’s handcrafted roots, displaying the word "Together" spelled out in rustic, cutout cardboard letters beneath an orange balloon donning a silly, endearing face.

Behind the scenes, the completion of Together was a collaborative effort supported by creative mentorship and professional contributions. The film was directed and animated entirely by Kim Soobin, whose creative vision was guided by mentor Kim Youngmin of Super Very More. Additional support for the project was provided by Kindwolf, while the atmospheric soundscapes that anchor the visual storytelling were crafted by sound designer Sunwoo Shawn Kim.
