GoPro may have recently expanded its technological horizons with its first-ever mirrorless camera designed to introduce adjustable focal lengths and artistic bokeh to the action camera ecosystem, but the fixed-lens models in the lineup are far from left behind. Action camera users looking for creative versatility received a significant boost with the introduction of new optical accessories tailored specifically for the brand’s larger-sensor devices. Third-party filter manufacturer PolarPro has officially announced the launch of its new Mission 1 Close-Up Filters, bringing specialized lens modification capabilities to the GoPro Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro action cameras.
Engineered to be fully compatible with both the standard Mission 1 and the high-end Mission 1 Pro, the freshly unveiled PolarPro filters are available to consumers in two distinct purchasing configurations. Creators can opt for a standalone 0.5x strength filter, or they can choose a comprehensive three-pack bundle that includes 0.5x, 1x, and 2x close-up filters. These specialized optical additions are designed to fundamentally alter how the fixed-lens Mission cameras interact with subjects in their environment, enabling operators to capture significantly tighter framing, achieve much closer focusing distances, and generate pronounced background blur that was previously difficult to attain with standard action camera optics.
Out of the box, the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro rely on a fixed-focus wide-angle lens configuration. Under normal operating conditions, this design means that virtually everything from approximately 24 inches, or 60 centimeters, and out toward infinity remains in sharp focus. While this expansive depth of field simplifies the process of shooting fast-paced action without worrying about pulling focus mid-scene, it inherently restricts a creator’s ability to isolate subjects or introduce dramatic, cinematic background separation. The introduction of these close-up filters directly addresses that limitation, though utilizing them naturally alters the signature edge-to-edge sharpness that defines traditional action camera styling.
With the installation of the 0.5x strength filter, the focusing range shifts to encompass everything from approximately 19.6 inches up to 59 inches in front of the lens. Stepping up to the +1 strength filter narrows that operational window further, bringing the sharp focus zone to roughly 17.7 to 35.4 inches. For creators pursuing extreme close-up perspectives, the +2 strength filter compresses the usable focus distance down to a tight span of 11.8 to 19.6 inches. This graduated system allows videographers to selectively control their compositions depending on the visual narrative they want to achieve, transitioning from standard wide vistas to intimate, macro-style detail shots.

While these screw-on or push-on filters cannot fully replicate the mechanical versatility of the swappable lenses found on the mirrorless Mission 1 Pro ILS platform, they inject a valuable degree of photographic flexibility into the fixed-lens bodies. Because the Mission 1 series incorporates a larger sensor than traditional action cameras, its physical optical properties prevent it from focusing as closely as smaller-sensor alternatives in the broader ecosystem. For comparison, the GoPro Hero13 Black boasts a minimum focus distance of roughly 12 inches, which is approximately twice as close as the native capabilities of the Mission 1 series.
This longer minimum focus distance can introduce notable framing challenges for creators who prefer to hold the camera at arm’s length for traditional selfies and vlogging setups without relying on an external tripod or selfie stick extension. By attaching the new PolarPro close-up filters, users can effectively bridge this gap, bringing the close-focus performance of the Mission 1 cameras much closer to the tighter, more intimate framing capabilities traditionally associated with smaller-sensor devices like the Hero13 Black.
According to product positioning details from PolarPro and GoPro, the lighter 0.5x strength filter is ideally suited for everyday vlogging applications and travel documentation where a modest amount of subject separation is desired. Meanwhile, the more aggressive +1 and +2 diopters are engineered for scenarios that demand dramatic subject isolation and intense background blur, giving creators a portable toolset for storytelling that mimics the look of larger cinema and mirrorless glass.
Constructed for durability in field conditions, the PolarPro close-up filters utilize a robust multi-coating system featuring 16 distinct layers. These specialized treatments are designed to actively minimize unwanted lens flare, ghosting, and reflections while repelling fingerprints and smudges during handling. The physical build is splashproof to handle inclement weather and wet environments, though the manufacturer notes that the accessories are not engineered or sealed for underwater shooting applications.

PolarPro has also designed the filters to withstand physical impacts, ensuring they can endure the rigors of active outdoor production. Each filter ships with a dedicated protective cover that can double as a conventional lens cap while remaining mounted directly on the GoPro hardware. While the physical design prevents the filters from being stacked on top of one another, the new diopters are fully compatible with GoPro’s existing neutral density filters. Furthermore, they are engineered to maintain complete compatibility with hardware additions like the Point-and-shoot Grip and the Media Mod, ensuring users do not have to sacrifice their preferred mounting accessories to use the glass.
While GoPro has a history of producing proprietary lens mods for its ecosystem, this particular line of close-up accessories comes via an official collaboration with filter specialist PolarPro. Alongside third-party distribution channels, the new filter kits will be sold directly through GoPro’s official online storefront. The individual 0.5x filter is available at a retail price of $49.99 in the United States and £49.99 in the United Kingdom, while the comprehensive three-filter bundle is priced at $99.99 and £100 respectively.
