Award-Winning Photograph of Trail Runner Ida Amelie Robsahm Takes on Poignant New Meaning Following Her Tragic Passing

A runner bends forward on a muddy climb, one hand pressed against her thigh, her face slick and glistening with sweat. The surrounding crowd is so thick, compressed tightly against the path, that there is barely room for her to push through. Just inches away, a spectator leans in, shouting words of encouragement while holding up a phone to capture the moment.

This striking, visceral black-and-white image, captured by Spanish photographer Ágata Dominguez, has just been awarded the Trail Category win at The Illume Awards 2026. Normally, such an accolade would be a cause for straightforward, unmitigated celebration within the international photography and adventure sports communities. However, the photograph’s triumph is now wrapped in profound sorrow. On September 19, the subject of the frame, Norwegian trail runner Ida Amelie Robsahm, tragically lost her life following a fall on Norway’s rugged Romsdalseggen ridge. She was only 30 years old.

The timing of the award has fundamentally shifted how the image is perceived by the public, the judges, and the photographer herself. What began as a masterclass in capturing the raw, unfiltered emotion of endurance athletics has transformed into an eternal monument to a vibrant life cut short.

"The photo means something different now," reflects Dominguez, looking back at the frame that has captured global attention. "What stays with me now is how lucky I was to be on that trail that day and to keep this small piece of her story and passion. I don’t want to celebrate ‘my’ photo. I’d rather celebrate her life, the impact she had on so many people, and the way she inspired them."

The photograph was originally shot this past May during the legendary Zegama-Aizkorri race at Sancti Spiritu, a punishing and iconic stretch of the course situated high above the town of Zegama in Spain’s Basque Country. Known for its notoriously brutal weather, steep inclines, and fanatical crowds that part like the sea only at the absolute last second, Zegama-Aizkorri is considered one of the holy grails of international skyrunning and trail racing.

Why this sports photographer doesn't want to celebrate her award-winning image: "The photo means something…

Getting in on the action

For Dominguez, who has lived and worked in the Swiss Alps for the past ten years, photographing the action at Sancti Spiritu had been a long-held professional dream. She describes the steep, muddy uphill stretch, lined densely with thousands of passionate spectators, as one of the most intensely emotional and atmospheric locations on the entire racing calendar. It is a place where runners are physically willed upward by the sheer volume and fervor of the crowd.

"As soon as I’d taken the shot," Dominguez recalls, "I had a feeling it would end up being one of my favorites."

Achieving that level of intimacy within a chaotic, shoulder-to-shoulder crowd requires more than just good timing; it demands complete immersion in the environment. Dominguez captured the defining scene using a Canon EOS R5 Mark II paired with a Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. Her technical settings—1/800 sec at f/4 and ISO 400—were carefully chosen to freeze the high-stress action crisply, avoiding any unwanted motion blur while maintaining depth in the challenging mountain light. Yet, the true genius of the composition lies not in the camera settings, but in the physical positioning of the photographer.

Dominguez positioned herself so deeply inside the scene that a dark shoulder and a pair of outstretched hands intrude directly onto the right side of the frame. This framing choice breaks traditional rules of clean composition, instead achieving something far more powerful: it places the viewer right inside the crowd, making everyone who looks at the image feel as though they are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Basque spectators, breathing the same thin mountain air and feeling the grit of the mud.

The panel of judges for The Illume Awards’ Trail Category—comprising professional photographer Will Saunders, filmmaker Alexis Berg, photographers Hilary and Billy Yang, and elite athlete Markus Kröll—recognized this rare quality immediately upon reviewing the submissions.

"It grabbed me immediately because of the emotion on her face," notes Billy Yang, describing the immediate visual impact of Robsahm’s expression. "But the longer I looked at it, the more I noticed: the expressions and body language of the spectators, the sense of movement and the way the composition pulls your attention directly toward the runner. It feels both intensely personal and completely communal."

That delicate balance between the individual struggle of the athlete and the collective energy of the supporters aligns precisely with what Dominguez strives to achieve through her lens. She has consistently maintained that her primary goal as a visual storyteller extends far beyond the technical pursuit of aesthetic perfection.

"I’m not just interested in getting the perfect shot," Dominguez explains. "I would like my images to make you feel something and, ideally, make you feel like you were there."

With this particular image, the feeling it evokes has evolved from shared adrenaline to collective mourning and remembrance. While the photography world recognizes the technical brilliance and emotional depth of the frame, Dominguez insists that the ultimate honor belongs to the woman who breathed life into the scene. Concluding her reflections on the award-winning image, the photographer offered a simple, heartbreaking dedication: "This one is for you. Run free, Ida."

The Illume Awards continue to celebrate the very finest in adventure and action sports photography, showcasing the dedication of athletes and the artists who document their feats.
