Hong Kong-Based Cappu Films Acquires Global Rights to Cult Martial Arts Franchise ‘African Kung-Fu Nazis’

Hong Kong-based distributor and production banner Cappu Films has secured the international sales rights to the wildly eccentric, cult martial arts splatter comedy “African Kung-Fu Nazis,” along with its highly anticipated sequel and an accompanying behind-the-scenes feature documentary. The strategic global agreement, which covers all remaining open territories while leaving previously established distribution deals completely untouched, was officially unveiled on the bustling sidelines of the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) in Taipei.

The sweeping package deal was successfully negotiated and finalized with filmmaker and producer Sebastian Stein of Humanmade Films. It encompasses three distinct titles that chronicle the evolution of one of independent cinema’s most unconventional franchises: the original feature “African Kung-Fu Nazis I,” the continuation “African Kung-Fu Nazis II,” and the comprehensive feature-length documentary “African Kung-Fu Nazis – The Doc,” which pulls back the curtain on the chaotic and passionate independent shoot that initially sparked the global phenomenon.

The acquisition marks a major milestone for a franchise that has steadily built a fiercely dedicated international following through sheer tenacity, DIY creativity, and a total disregard for conventional genre boundaries. Blending high-energy kung fu choreography, over-the-top gore, classic horror tropes, and biting dark comedy, the series draws its primary creative inspiration from vintage Hong Kong martial arts cinema as well as the vibrant, resourceful energy of Ghana’s thriving independent filmmaking community. In the original film, Ghanaian martial artists find themselves locked in bizarre combat against satirical send-ups of infamous wartime figures from Germany and Japan, a surreal lineup that famously features caricatures of Adolf Hitler, Hideki Tojo, and a character known as “Horseman” Goering.

The expansive sequel elevates the madness even further. It teams up a determined one-armed fighter named Addo with a character named Sek Tin to battle a terrifying cyborg antagonist designated as “Adolf Robotler,” who launches a nefarious bid to become the president of Ghana. According to Stein, the production of the sequel was a massive collaborative international effort. Functioning as a Ghana-Japan-Germany co-production shot primarily on location in Ghana, the film was financed largely through grassroots crowdfunding campaigns, with an exceptionally enthusiastic wave of Japanese fans of the original movie providing a substantial portion of the financial backing.

Meanwhile, “African Kung-Fu Nazis – The Doc” offers fans and film scholars an intimate look behind the scenes, documenting the trials, tribulations, and triumphant moments of the ultra-independent shoot that originally birthed the franchise out of sheer creative willpower.

Reflecting on the core philosophy that drives the series, Stein, who serves as the CEO of Humanmade Films, shared his enthusiasm for the chaotic spirit that defines the projects. With their love for Chinese kung fu, our Ghanaian heroes smash the threat of fascism, Stein remarked, emphasizing that the franchise represents total freedom and beautiful madness. He added a characteristic philosophical note about the risks inherent in independent filmmaking, stating that one cannot expect to drink champagne without taking a calculated risk.

The international marketing push coordinated by Cappu Films and the filmmakers will not be limited strictly to traditional theatrical and home video windows. The partners are also laying the groundwork for an exclusive line of art-led merchandise. Produced through Cappu’s sister company, Winners Gallery, the merchandise line will be built around the franchise’s distinctive visual style and memorable characters, though specific product concepts and release schedules remain under wraps as final plans are still being polished.

Janice Woo of Cappu Films explained the strategic thinking behind the acquisition, highlighting the company’s deep affinity for uncompromising cinematic voices. Cappu operates out of Beijing alongside its Hong Kong presence and handles selective distribution for both its home market and the broader mainland China territory. The company’s diverse catalog reflects a broad taste in compelling global cinema, ranging from high-profile commercial titles to adventurous independent narratives. Woo noted that the distributor holds a profound appreciation for fiercely independent horror and cult films, and they are eager to champion creators who forge entirely unique paths.

There is a genuine love of kung fu cinema embedded within these films, Woo observed. Because the team at Cappu comes from a production background themselves, they intimately understand the immense dedication, physical labor, and logistical hurdles required to bring a fiercely independent project like this to the screen. She expressed genuine excitement about collaborating with Sebastian Stein to introduce all three components of the franchise to wider audiences across the globe.

Cappu Films’ diverse and ambitious distribution slate underscores its eclectic market positioning. The company’s active catalog features high-profile projects such as the Tony Leung Chiu-wai crime thriller “Fox Hunt,” alongside Shan Jiang’s critically noted “Ephemera,” which secured a prestigious premiere in the U.S. Narrative Competition at the Tribeca Festival. The lineup further extends into contemporary romance and grand-scale fantasy adventure, including Carter Ward’s romance feature “Step Back, Doors Closing” and Francesco Lucente’s fantasy adventure “Sinbad,” a high-profile project that boasts co-financing and production backing from visual effects powerhouse DNEG.

As Cappu Films integrates the “African Kung-Fu Nazis” catalog into its international sales operations, the deal ensures that the franchise’s unique brand of cross-cultural martial arts satire will continue to find new appreciative audiences worldwide, cementing the legacy of its intrepid Ghanaian creators on the global stage.
