Framestore’s CG Creature Team Crafts Brave Reindeer for The National Lottery’s New Holiday Campaign

The holiday advertising season has officially gained a major contender as Framestore’s world-renowned creature team in London partners with Arts and Sciences director Tim McNaughton to deliver a visually stunning campaign for the UK’s National Lottery. Centered around a brave and resilient reindeer, the commercial blends high-end visual realism with deep emotional storytelling, capturing quiet determination against a breathtaking winter backdrop.

Commissioned by client Allwyn UK and developed in collaboration with creative agency VCCP, the holiday spot showcases Framestore’s elite caliber in computer-generated character animation and photo-real visual effects. The project relied on an intensive blend of on-location reference gathering, complex technical pipelines, and painstaking hand-animated performances to bring the hero reindeer to life.

Bringing the Reindeer to Life Through Reference and Rigor

Production on the campaign began in the rugged and dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. To ensure that the digital creatures moved with absolute authenticity, the production team filmed a live herd of reindeer in their natural environment. These live-action reference plates provided the foundational blueprint for Framestore’s artists, offering invaluable data on weight distribution, muscle movement, stride frequency, and behavioral traits.

However, capturing the nuanced emotional arc required for the narrative demanded a departure from standard industry workflows. According to the production team, achieving the story’s specific emotional range within a notoriously tight commercial schedule meant bypassing automated motion capture entirely. Instead, the studio opted for bespoke, hand-keyed animation crafted completely from scratch. This meticulous manual approach allowed artists to inject subtle expressions, purposeful intent, and deep emotional resonance into the hero reindeer’s performance, transforming a digital animal into a compelling protagonist driven by unflagging determination.

Advanced Technical Pipelines and Winterized Environments

Underneath the artistic performances lies a deeply sophisticated technical infrastructure. Framestore’s advanced Houdini pipeline served as the backbone for the photo-real character work and complex visual effects. Every physical detail of the reindeer was simulated to match harsh winter conditions, ranging from dynamic muscle systems shifting beneath the skin to thousands of individual groom strands reacting to wind and movement.

The technical complexity extended further into atmospheric and environmental simulations. Artists generated condensing winter breath that interacts naturally with the freezing air, alongside reactive, physics-based simulations of interactive snow and flowing water. These elements were integrated into meticulously constructed digital environments that matched the live-action plates down to the smallest detail—replicating specific rock formations, native branches, and challenging terrain.

To achieve seamless integration between the practical footage and computer-generated assets, the team tracked camera motion precisely to the Highland footage. This ensured that the digital reindeer and its winterized surroundings sat convincingly within the real-world plates captured by Director of Photography Joost Van Gelder, creating an unbroken visual illusion for the viewer.

Direction was led by Tim McNaughton of Arts and Sciences, supported by producer Ewen Brown. On the post-production front, Framestore’s extensive roster of artists oversaw everything from initial asset building and grooming to lighting, layout, FX, and compositing, ensuring the highest standard of visual craftsmanship throughout the piece.

Color grading for the commercial was handled by Company 3, led by renowned colorists Jean-Clement Soret and Dominic Phipps, bringing out the crisp, cold tones and warm emotional highlights of the Scottish landscape. Audio post-production was managed by 750 Sound, featuring sound design and a mix by Sam Ashwell, which added an immersive acoustic layer to the wintry vistas.

The campaign’s rich musical score was composed by Chris White through music company SIREN, with music supervision by Sian Rogers, Alice Barker, and Josh Gibbard. The orchestral elements were brought to life by conductor and orchestrator Peter Michael Davison alongside orchestrator Danny Keane, recorded at the historic Air Edel Studios. To round out the production, the voiceover was delivered by Claudia Winkleman, tying the ambitious holiday narrative together.
