Fanatics Debuts ‘Hometown Remix’ Collection in First Leaguewide Jersey Collaboration with the NHL

Fanatics is deepening its footprint in professional hockey with a brand-new collaboration with the National Hockey League, introducing a collection of 32 custom jerseys that rely on bespoke typography, distinct color palettes, and local symbolism to pay homage to the rich histories of each team’s home city.

The expansive new collection, titled Hometown Remix, represents a major leaguewide special edition uniform, apparel, and headwear program. Designed entirely in-house by the global sports platform Fanatics, the initiative includes a custom-tailored jersey for every single NHL franchise. These unique uniforms are slated to be worn by players on the ice at multiple points throughout the ongoing hockey season. Alongside the on-ice uniforms, the rollout includes a comprehensive, matching line of fan gear and lifestyle apparel tailored for supporters across North America.

Every single jersey in the collection was brought to life through a rigorous series of collaborative workshops held between Fanatics design teams and the individual NHL clubs. These iterative sessions were structured to ensure that every final look genuinely represents the distinct local culture, architectural heritage, and community identity of each franchise. The very first wave of these custom jerseys will officially hit the ice on November 2, when the Florida Panthers, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the San Jose Sharks suit up in their respective regional designs. Meanwhile, the corresponding fan apparel collection is already available to purchase across the digital Fanatics network of e-commerce sites and through physical team stores.

Since officially stepping into the role of the NHL’s exclusive on-ice uniform partner in 2024, Fanatics has steadily expanded its creative portfolio. The brand has previously designed several specialized, high-profile uniforms for major marquee events, including the 4 Nations Face-Off and the traditional NHL Winter Classic. However, with the launch of the Hometown Remix program, Fanatics is making its official and highly anticipated first foray into a comprehensive, leaguewide jersey initiative. The strategic rollout demonstrates how both Fanatics and league leadership are increasingly leveraging thoughtful apparel design to drum up excitement, conversation, and anticipation throughout the lengthy hockey calendar.

How Leaguewide Custom Jerseys Took Off

For devoted and long-standing NHL fans, the concept of a leaguewide jersey program is not entirely new territory. The professional league first experimented with a similar collective uniform strategy back in November 2020, when it launched an innovative jersey line known as Reverse Retro in partnership with its then-official outfitter, Adidas. That initial program created custom uniforms for each club that were directly inspired by a specific, memorable era in the franchise’s historical archives, but deliberately updated with a modern, contemporary spin.

The concept proved to be an overwhelming commercial and cultural success among hockey enthusiasts. Capitalizing on that momentum, Adidas brought the concept back for a second iteration in 2022. That subsequent launch triggered a massive online surge of fan theories, viral social media speculation, and elaborate fan-made mock-ups circulating across digital hockey communities.

At the height of that excitement, Dan Near, who served as the senior director at Adidas hockey, spoke candidly with ESPN about the phenomenon. "We’re excited about the speculation," Near said at the time. "I think if you look back at the first time we launched in 2020, it came out of nowhere. Nobody knew what it was."

That initial element of surprise and subsequent visual storytelling created a passionate, dedicated cult following among NHL devotees. It became immediately apparent to league executives and sports marketers alike that these creative uniform programs represented a powerful, ongoing marketing opportunity that resonated deeply with consumers.

When Fanatics subsequently secured its landmark partnership with the league, discussions regarding a signature leaguewide initiative naturally emerged as a top priority. Dom Fillion, the vice president of creative design and innovation at Fanatics, noted that the concept was a frequent topic of discussion from the very beginning of their commercial relationship.

"When we partnered up with the NHL, there was always a conversation around, ‘Is there going to be a leaguewide initiative? Is that something that Fanatics can bring to the table?’" Fillion explains. He adds that the creative teams did not have to look far to validate consumer demand, noting, "We certainly heard about it from fans on socials and in conversation as well."

With the Hometown Remix collection now officially out in the open and the first wave of games featuring the new uniforms rapidly approaching, Fanatics and the NHL are looking to capture that same lightning-in-a-bottle energy that defined previous alternate uniform crazes. By combining local cultural pride with the meticulous craftsmanship developed through their direct team workshops, the companies hope to set a new standard for how sports apparel can connect a professional franchise to the heartbeat of its home city.
