Redefining Silicon Valley Living: Hommeboys Interiors Overhauls a 6,000-Square-Foot Los Altos Hills Sanctuary

Nestled within the dense woodlands and rolling hills of California’s exclusive Los Altos Hills enclave, a newly completed 6,000-square-foot residential overhaul bridges the gap between modern architectural grandeur and warm, organic living. Known for its panoramic vistas and proximity to the epicenter of technological innovation, this semi-rural community serves as a private haven for Silicon Valley executives. It is here that the Sonoma-based design firm Hommeboys Interiors, founded by partners Alex Mutter-Rottmayer and Austin Carrier, recently completed a comprehensive gut remodel for a young tech industry couple and their children.

The project reflects a growing design ethos among high-end homeowners seeking spaces that feel elevated and architecturally significant without sacrificing the comfort and approachability required for everyday family life. For these clients, who tasked the designers with creating a home that felt "grand without feeling cold," Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier emerged as a natural choice. The duo has built a reputation for an inherent talent in dissolving the traditional barrier between indoor and outdoor living environments, crafting heavily layered and textural interiors that place a premium on organic materials executed with a modern sensibility.

The extensive renovation required a complete reimagining of the property both inside and out. The original exterior shell was reworked extensively to better integrate the sprawling structure with its lush, wooded surroundings. Now clad in a sophisticated combination of natural stone and timber, the building’s exterior profile was modified to accommodate an expansive gable window wall at the rear. This architectural intervention dramatically alters the interior dynamics, allowing ample natural light to penetrate deep into the home’s core and establishing an immediate visual dialogue between the built environment and the rugged California landscape.

Upon crossing the threshold, the connection to the natural world is reinforced through a carefully curated and cohesive material palette. Wood and stone play pivotal roles throughout the floor plan, cladding most surfaces to lend inherent warmth, depth, and tactile variety. Rich with character, prominent-grained oak paneling covers walls and ceilings across the residence. This choice of woodwork not only introduces a continuous thread of organic texture but also acts as a subtle diffuser of light, fostering an inviting, serene atmosphere that counters the typically sleek lines of contemporary architecture.

The grounding presence of natural stone walls imparts a subdued ruggedness to the interior spaces, which is deliberately balanced by more refined, highly polished finishes. These include dramatically veined marbles, delicate hand-applied plaster, and patinated steel accents that catch the light from the expansive windows. Rather than relying on stark minimalism, the designers curated an environment where contrasting textures engage in a visual conversation, elevating each material through its juxtaposition against another.

Special attention was dedicated to the three distinct fireplaces that anchor multiple rooms throughout the residence, serving as both functional heating elements and sculptural centerpieces. In the primary living room, an angular, plaster-clad fireplace was conceived by the designers to act as the undeniable showpiece of the space. According to Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier, this functional sculpture sets the tone for the entire room, with its deliberate curves inspiring much of the surrounding furniture selection.

That furniture curation features a number of tactile pieces sourced directly from the designers’ own atelier line, Haus of Hommeboys, including hide- and velvet-covered poufs alongside castellated planters. These bespoke items are complemented by design classics sourced through the firm, such as a vintage Julep sofa designed by Tacchini and a coffee table by Raymonde Leduc. Together, these pieces reinforce the living room’s balance of sculptural form and approachable comfort.

In the family room, the design narrative shifts toward intimacy and warmth through the use of hand-patinated Corten panels that cover an entire fireplace wall. This bold architectural choice lends the space a moody, cocoon-like ambiance that contrasts with the light-filled openness of the rest of the home. The designers note that they revel in playing with materiality, pointing to the way the steel fireplace meets the surrounding plaster walls as an example of a successful marriage of symmetry and visual tension. The third fireplace, situated within the primary bedroom suite, features a finish of hand-applied plaster with a linear texture, establishing a bold yet serene contrast within the private quarters.

At the literal and figurative heart of the home lies the kitchen, which exemplifies Hommeboys’ unique ability to utilize natural materials and rich textures in unexpected ways. Framed by rich oak paneling, striking Calacatta Monet marble, and complementary natural stone, the kitchen is designed to be open, highly functional, and welcoming. It serves as the primary hub for the family’s daily routines and acts as a central gathering space when the couple hosts guests, a pastime they heavily favor. Hovering above this active space is a spectacular 15-foot-long, custom-designed lighting fixture crafted by Ovature Studio, which defines the room and provides a sharp, graphic counterpoint to the organic materials below.

Throughout the residence, the overarching design philosophy remains rooted in creating a home that acknowledges its modern architecture while remaining deeply tethered to the natural world. By leaning heavily into natural materials, the design team avoided the trap of creating a sterile, museum-like environment, opting instead for an organic, timeless quality that feels both warm and inviting. Approachable, sophisticated, and bathed in natural light, the completed Los Altos Hills residence now stands as a refined yet functional backdrop for the vibrant family life that unfolds within its walls.
