Enshrouded 1.0 Review: The Fog of War Clears, Revealing a Survival Crafting Masterpiece

Our Verdict: The fog of war clears around Embervale, revealing a survival crafting masterpiece.

High up on a mountain in the Albaneve Summits, just on the southern border of Enshrouded’s new zone, sits the location for a prospective medieval building project. Free from nearby enemy spawns on a flat stretch of land, and complete with a frozen pond that gives it a distinct charm, the site offers an ideal canvas for a cliffside castle. The primary obstacle is accessibility; the spot cannot be reached by traditional climbing or gliding, forcing a choice between a time-consuming construction project or a more direct, if unorthodox, approach. Armed with explosives and pickaxes, players can carve a tunnel straight from the base of the mountainside to the top, trading initial aesthetic neatness for immediate passage.

This freedom defines Enshrouded: the ability to destroy or build practically anything, anywhere within Embervale’s voxel-based world. It stands as a survival crafting sandbox filled with handcrafted details, where every location hidden by the fog of war potentially conceals a new material, a powerful weapon, or a scenic vista. Long after initial surprises might have worn off in similar titles, the 1.0 build continues to introduce inventive elements.

Built Different

Enshrouded occupies a unique space in the gaming landscape, sitting somewhere between a traditional survival crafting game and a typical action RPG. Its combat system and base-building options are considerably more robust than most survival crafting peers, yet it avoids extreme brutality. Progression is driven less by desperate survival and more by the desire to explore Embervale, a land laid low by a mysterious, malignant miasma known as the Shroud. With hardly a soul left in the world, the history of the realm is pieced together through journals—some hastily scribbled by would-be heroes, others tragic accounts of a person’s final days.

Players awaken from a mystical slumber as the Flameborn, an ordained chosen one and the last hope for restoring the ruins of Embervale. Initially equipped with little more than a ragged armor set, a stick, and a handful of berries, the character gradually progresses toward magic-infused swords and high-tier provisions. While it follows standard genre progression, Enshrouded sets itself apart by omitting punitive survival mechanics such as debilitating fatigue, randomized crafting failures, and structural integrity requirements.

The game instead rewards players through a comfort system. As long as shelter, fire, and decor are provided, characters gain stamina-boosting buffs simply by spending time at home, without the threat of death from lack of sleep. Unique furnishings possess individual comfort statistics, encouraging exploration of Embervale for new rugs, fireplaces, and other interior items to extend and strengthen the buffs. This integration rewards base-building efforts that often yield no tangible gameplay benefit in other titles.

The introduction of the version 1.0 build also brings Sparkworks, a logic system enabling players to create custom enemy spawns, player-triggered events, world builds, and bespoke dungeons. These creations can be shared with others, allowing the community to design and test intricate obstacle courses. Alongside this, a revised build camera makes construction in tight corners significantly smoother and more precise.

Fog of War

Repetitive tasks can easily breed exasperation within the survival crafting genre, but Enshrouded manages the line between tedium and satisfaction through its approach to risk and reward, bolstered by complex RPG elements. Rather than relying on a few barebones statistics, the Flameborn can specialize across 12 different skill trees. In multiplayer sessions, these trees allow groups to establish clear combat roles—such as tanks, healers, glass-cannon wizards, and stealthy assassins—alongside domestic responsibilities like mining, woodcutting, gardening, and cooking.

Boss fights and massive dungeons, known as Hollow Halls, demand coordinated group play rather than simple, repetitive attack patterns. While solo players can conquer these challenges, multiplayer groups benefit immensely from specialized team compositions, though parties of more than a few players are advised to utilize dedicated servers to mitigate performance drops.

Multiplayer sessions do present occasional friction points, particularly when world progression quests are completed out of sync. If absent friends log back in after major milestones have been advanced by their peers, their journal objectives can temporarily misalign, displaying missed quests. While this can cause minor confusion, it rarely blocks access to crafting recipes or new biomes, meaning the penalty is largely confined to missed experience points and narrative context rather than hard progression locks.

Despite minor grievances regarding quest synchronization, Enshrouded distinguishes itself through polish, distinct identity, and depth. Its building tools and hidden nooks across Embervale offer an experience that redefines expectations for the survival crafting genre.
