HeroQuest is Making the Jump to PC with an Official Digital Edition Set for 2027

Avalon Hill’s popular deluxe rerelease of the classic dungeon crawl board game HeroQuest is officially making the transition to the digital space. HeroQuest: Digital Edition is currently in development by Nomad Games, a studio with a proven track record of successfully adapting beloved tabletop and board gaming experiences into video games, including titles such as Talisman, Love Letter, and Fury of Dracula.

For fans of the original fantasy adventure game, the digital adaptation promises to deliver all the quintessential elements that defined the physical tabletop experience. Players can look forward to classic dungeon-crawling activities, including goblin-bashing, trap-disarming, treasure-hunting, and spell-casting, all brought to life on computer screens.

The digital version is designed to accommodate a variety of play styles, catering to both solitary adventurers and groups of friends. Alongside a robust solo mode—where the computer takes on the mantle of the Evil Wizard and his various subterranean minions—the game will support online multiplayer functionality. This cooperative setup allows up to four players to team up as the core group of heroes, while a fifth player can optionally step into the role of the villainous mastermind, Zargon. Because the digital adaptation draws its inspiration from the American version of the board game, fans will note the use of the name Zargon rather than Morcar, aligning with the regional branding of the modern physical release.

The HeroQuest board game is coming to Steam with a quest editor and multiplayer

One of the most promising details revealed about the upcoming adaptation is the inclusion of a comprehensive quest editor. This feature will empower players to design and construct their own custom maps and missions, giving the community the tools to generate endless replayability. Furthermore, the integration of mod.io support means that players will be able to easily browse, share, and download user-created quests crafted by other adventurers from around the world.

While the core mechanics of the classic board game will remain intact, fans are hopeful that the digital release will incorporate some of the helpful modern rule adjustments introduced in recent expansions and spin-offs, such as HeroQuest First Light. Specifically, players have noted the utility of the alternative rule allowing characters to simply move a set distance of eight squares per turn rather than forcing a roll of the dice, provided there are no active monsters on the board. Without such a quality-of-life adjustment, slogging back across a massive dungeon to reach the exit two dice rolls at a time can occasionally transform into a tedious chore.

HeroQuest: Digital Edition is currently scheduled for an official release on Steam in 2027. Ahead of the full launch, the development team plans to host a closed beta playtest, giving eager fans an opportunity to experience the digital dungeons firsthand and provide feedback before the game opens to the broader public.
