Henry Scholfield and SAGA Track Crown Royal Through Time in Obsessively Detailed CG Campaign

In a remarkable display of technical precision and artistic direction, Toronto-based motion design studio SAGA has teamed up with Spy Films director Henry Scholfield to guide viewers through a breathtaking, nine-decade journey across Canadian history. Created for the venerable and enduring blended whisky brand Crown Royal, the campaign meticulously reconstructs nearly a century of life, culture, and architecture, grounding a digital marvel in a deeply nostalgic and tactile aesthetic.

The ambitious commercial, which bridges the gap between historical documentary and cutting-edge computer-generated artistry, relies heavily on thorough world-building rather than traditional, straightforward product placement. According to SAGA Creative Director Joey Recoskie, the core philosophy behind the project was to avoid constructing a simple series of pristine product shots. Instead, the creative team undertook the massive challenge of recreating complete, living environments populated by period-authentic architecture, carefully curated furniture, accurate historical lighting, diverse materials, and era-specific styling. The ultimate goal was to construct spaces that not only honored the passage of time but also felt entirely familiar, lived-in, and emotionally resonant to anyone watching.

To achieve this level of historical authenticity, every single element associated with the brand itself had to undergo the same rigorous treatment. Alongside the expansive historical environments, the iconic Crown Royal bottle, its distinctive cap, paper label, and signature velvet bag were meticulously recreated in three dimensions. The digital asset team paid close attention to detail, preserving the subtle design changes and evolutions that the packaging has undergone over the decades, thereby reflecting the brand’s enduring heritage and deep roots in Canadian culture.

Crafting a visual narrative that spans nearly a century of Canadian life required an extraordinary amount of logistical planning and digital asset creation. The production demanded an expansive library comprising more than 500 bespoke props and environmental assets. Every single object—ranging from vintage radios and books to small decorative knick-knacks and barware—was custom modeled and surfaced from scratch. Once the foundational modeling was complete, the artists layered each individual item with unique signs of age, wear, use, and weathering, ensuring that no two objects looked identical and that every corner of the virtual sets told a story of everyday life over the generations.

However, the team did not stop at high-end digital rendering. To reinforce the deeply nostalgic quality of the narrative and to strip away the clinical perfection often associated with modern computer graphics, the final CG footage underwent a unique physical transformation. The rendered digital scenes were transferred to physical film across multiple traditional formats, including 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, and even analog VHS tape. This physical transfer process introduced authentic film grain, warmth, light leaks, and subtle imperfections that organically echoed the emotional weight of the story itself. As a result, the finished commercial feels far less like a sterile digital recreation of history and much more like a collection of genuine, faded memories captured permanently in time.

The realization of this expansive project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a talented roster of creative professionals across multiple disciplines. On the client side, the campaign was commissioned by Crown Royal, with strategic guidance provided by agency Courage Inc. Production duties were handled by Spy Films under the steady direction of Henry Scholfield, whose distinct visual style helped shape the overarching pacing and mood of the historical journey.

The heavy lifting of the computer graphics and motion design was spearheaded by SAGA. Under the leadership of Creative Director Joey Recoskie, executive producer Ashley Monaghan, and producer Brittany Sheahan, the studio brought together a specialized team of artists and technicians. Product modeling was expertly managed by Justin Goode, while modeling, design, and animation tasks were shared between Chris Moberg and Tektura Studio. The intricate processes of lighting and rendering were brought to life through the combined efforts of Chris Moberg, Tektura Studio, and Jeff Briant. Compositing work was skillfully executed by Feather, ensuring that all visual elements blended seamlessly before the final analog film transfer, which was completed by Rascal. The auditory landscape of the campaign, which completes the immersive historical atmosphere, was crafted by the team at Boombox Sound.
