Forza Motorsport and Turn 10 Studios Co-Founder Dan Greenawalt Retires After Nearly 27 Years at Microsoft

After nearly 27 years of shaping the landscape of racing video games at Microsoft, Dan Greenawalt, the studio head of Turn 10 Studios and a key architect of the acclaimed Forza franchise, is planning to retire. News of Greenawalt’s departure emerged through an internal memo circulated by Trevor Williams of Playground Games, marking the end of an era for one of Xbox’s most enduring and recognizable creative leaders.

According to Williams’s memo, Greenawalt decided that the present moment was the right time to step away from Microsoft. To ensure a smooth transition during an ongoing period of corporate reorganization, Greenawalt will remain with the company temporarily to act in an advisory capacity.

Greenawalt’s footprint on the games industry spans nearly three decades, beginning with his work on pioneering racing titles for the original Xbox console. In 2001, he helped ship Project Gotham Racing, a critically acclaimed title that laid the technical and design groundwork for what would eventually become Microsoft’s premier racing banner. Following that success, Greenawalt founded Turn 10 Studios in Redmond, Washington, specifically to build the Forza Motorsport franchise from the ground up, establishing it as a direct competitor to Sony’s dominant Gran Turismo series.

Over the years, Greenawalt became a familiar face to gaming enthusiasts worldwide, frequently taking the stage at major industry events like E3. True to his passion, his presentations often featured dramatic entrances accompanied by high-performance supercars, reflecting the authentic car culture that he sought to instill in the Forza games. In the internal memo, Williams acknowledged the profound influence of Greenawalt’s tenure, highlighting his leadership, partnership, and consistent support across multiple generations of Xbox hardware. On behalf of both Turn 10 and Playground Games, Williams expressed deep gratitude for Greenawalt’s contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors.

Greenawalt’s retirement arrives amid a period of profound restructuring across Microsoft’s gaming division, Xbox. In September, Microsoft announced sweeping organizational changes that include the consolidation of its core racing development teams. Under the new corporate strategy, Turn 10 Studios and Playground Games—the two primary studios responsible for the Forza series—are being merged into a single cohesive entity.

This corporate realignment is part of a much broader wave of restructuring within Xbox that has impacted multiple marquee franchises and studios. Recent organizational updates have seen Obsidian Entertainment merged into Bethesda, while management of the storied Halo franchise has been handed over to Activision. Alongside these structural integrations, Microsoft confirmed that the overarching reorganization involves laying off 268 employees across various divisions.

The integration of Turn 10 and Playground Games reflects a shifting dynamic for the Forza brand, which has evolved significantly over the past decade. While Turn 10 spent years developing the track-focused Forza Motorsport simulation series, Playground Games achieved massive mainstream success with the open-world Forza Horizon spin-offs, set in fictionalized versions of locations like Britain and Mexico. Following the release and subsequent 2023 reboot of Forza Motorsport, Turn 10 had increasingly transitioned into a support studio role to assist Playground Games with the ongoing development and support of the Forza Horizon ecosystem.

The changing fortunes of the two series have not gone unnoticed by former developers. Last year, former developer Fred Russell commented publicly on the shifting priorities within Microsoft’s racing division, suggesting that the original Motorsport line had effectively been phased out following previous rounds of corporate cuts, even as the Forza Horizon franchise continues to thrive and command a massive global player base.

As Turn 10 and Playground Games merge into a single unified powerhouse under Xbox, Greenawalt’s departure marks the definitive close of a foundational chapter for the studio he helped build. While Greenawalt will assist with the handover process during this transitional period, his retirement signals a major generational shift for Microsoft’s racing portfolio as the company steers its studios into a new era.
