The ENTE Roomy V2 Handbag Rethinks Interior Architecture with Split-Case Design and Built-In Lighting

For decades, the standard handbag has remained structurally trapped in a paradox: it is predominantly a leather pouch adorned with meticulous exterior hardware, fine stitching, and carefully crafted silhouettes, yet its interior is often left to chance. Unzip a typical luxury or everyday bag, and you are generally greeted by a single, undifferentiated cavity where keys, AirPods cases, receipts, and cosmetics coexist in a perpetual state of disorder. While designers pour immense creative energy into external aesthetics, internal organization is frequently relegated to two or three haphazardly placed side pockets. Luxury options often deliver elegance paired with internal chaos, whereas functional alternatives frequently lean heavily into the utilitarian language of tech accessories and industrial gear.

This long-standing divide between high fashion and practical utility has largely gone unchallenged by major design houses. However, a new crowdfunding project seeks to bridge that gap. The ENTE Roomy V2 handbag approaches internal organization with the same architectural rigor typically reserved for the exterior, introducing a design concept that redefines how everyday carry items are stored, accessed, and illuminated.

At the core of the Roomy V2 is a rigid, symmetrical split-case architecture developed by design studio ENTE. Rather than functioning as a standard single-compartment pouch, the bag hinges open flat into two clean, fully visible halves. The studio describes the structure as the world’s first split-case handbag architecture—a notable claim in an industry that has largely relied on the same fundamental pouch geometry for generations. Regardless of how the title holds up under rigorous design scrutiny, the structural mechanics present a genuinely novel approach to interior spatial design in personal carry goods.

The creative forces behind the project are Tina Joseph and Kareem, founders of ENTE, who share an eight-year collaborative partnership based in Chennai, India. Joseph oversees the aesthetic and conceptual vision, while Kareem directs the structural engineering, ensuring that all functional innovations remain entirely concealed until the bag is opened. While the design and engineering take place in India, the Kickstarter campaign for the Roomy V2 is structured through a collaborator located in Frankfurt, Germany, reflecting an international footprint for the independent studio.

The inspiration behind the split-case geometry stems from industrial design principles rather than traditional fashion methodologies. By treating the interior of the bag the way an industrial designer might approach a wall-mounted workspace, ENTE establishes a logical framework where every item has a dedicated position. Custom detachable leather gussets can be attached to create a generous, wide opening for everyday use, or removed entirely to allow the bag to hinge completely flat, providing total visual clarity of all contents simultaneously. Because every essential item secures to its own designated wall position, the central compartment remains entirely open and free of clutter, ready to accommodate bulkier items when necessary.

Observers of modern design may find structural parallels in previous experimental carry concepts, such as Nendo’s MAQL bag, which similarly utilized foundational geometry to fundamentally alter how an everyday object operates. In the case of the Roomy V2, this architectural layout is complemented by an integrated illumination system designed to eliminate the frustration of searching for small items in low-light environments.

A concealed, user-replaceable dry-cell DC battery circuit is built directly into the structural wall of the bag, powering an ambient interior glow. The activation mechanism is seamlessly integrated into the design, featuring no external buttons or visible switches that would betray its presence. Lifting the subtle "ENTE" logo tab activates the lighting system, offering a practical solution for common daily inconveniences, such as retrieving keys or wireless earbuds in dim parking garages or evening settings. Because the battery is user-friendly and replaceable by the owner, it avoids the inconvenience of requiring specialized servicing when power eventually runs low. ENTE refers to this feature as the Camouflaged Stealth Switch, emphasizing the seamless blending of technology with traditional leather craft.

Beyond its core split-case layout and lighting system, the Roomy V2 incorporates a series of micro-friction and modular solutions aimed at daily convenience. A stretchable key leash allows users to unlock doors or scan access cards without removing the bag from their shoulder. For quick outings where minimal carry is required, a built-in card case mounts securely to the interior wall and detaches instantly. Meanwhile, a magnetic self-aligning handle closure replaces traditional snap buttons, enabling smooth, one-handed operation. All internal hardware components are wall-mounted to preserve the integrity and openness of the central storage space.

Attention to detail extends to specialized storage features that address common wear-and-tear issues associated with everyday accessories. The laptop pocket closure tab doubles as a secure earring slot, preventing small jewelry pieces from rattling around and sustaining damage inside a standard bag. Additionally, a detachable jewel tab loop on the side wall suspends chains and rings safely during transit, stopping them from tangling or scratching against other interior elements. For sensitive documents or items requiring heightened security, a secret pocket is embedded discreetly at the structural base, keeping valuables out of casual reach. These integrated jewelry and security provisions represent thoughtful touches frequently omitted from conventional organized bags, building upon design conversations seen in earlier Kickstarter projects like Formula Studio’s modular Addition Bag.

To ensure its functional innovations do not compromise its aesthetic appeal, the Roomy V2 maintains a refined, structured handbag silhouette on the exterior. It successfully avoids the common pitfall of functional carry systems that inadvertently drift into gadget territory. The medium-sized iteration accommodates screens up to 11 inches, while the large version supports devices up to 14 inches via a dedicated padded laptop and tablet sleeve integrated directly into the spatial layout.

Material selection plays a critical role in supporting the bag’s structural ambitions. The exterior is crafted from top-grain leather, complemented by custom high-quality metal hardware and high-density brass teeth zippers. Backers can choose between two distinct leather textures: a premium cut plate design and a classic pebble pattern. Construction standards are further underscored by a stitching density of eight to nine stitches per inch, serving as an indicator of finish integrity and long-term durability. These tactile qualities are essential for ensuring that the product maintains its appeal well beyond the initial novelty of its architectural features.

The execution of the Roomy V2 is backed by substantial hands-on manufacturing experience. Between 2019 and 2023, the ENTE team operated its own manufacturing unit dedicated to shoes and bags before strategically transitioning away from factory operations to focus exclusively on brand development. This background provides the founders with a comprehensive understanding of supply chains, structural leather assembly, and production realities. Furthermore, it affords them established connections with top-tier material suppliers and expert artisan workshops within India’s prominent manufacturing sector, offering backers a strong foundation of confidence regarding manufacturing execution as the project moves forward.
