Cable News Ratings Analysis: CNN Shows Growth Across the Board While Fox News Maintains Dominance for the Week of October 5, 2026

The latest basic cable network ranker and cable news report for the week of October 5, 2026, reveals a shifting landscape across the major cable news networks. While Fox News continues to command a massive lead in overall viewership by a wide margin, the ratings period highlighted notable momentum for CNN, which stood out as the sole network to register growth across total viewers and the critical Adults 25-54 demographic during both primetime and total day viewing. Meanwhile, MS NOW experienced a challenging week with across-the-board declines, though it still managed to capture key victories in specific time slots.

The ratings data, based on Nielsen big data and panel metrics for the week beginning October 5, 2026, arrives during a turbulent and newsworthy period for the industry. CNN, which has recently dominated headlines due to an ongoing White House press ban and its evolving ownership situation under Skydance, capitalized on its current visibility. The network not only posted solid weekly gains but also nearly erased the demographic gap between itself and MS NOW during total day programming, narrowing the difference to a razor-thin margin of just 1,000 viewers.

Fox News, despite minor fluctuations in total audience size, remains comfortably positioned as the most-watched cable news network by a substantial margin. The network’s primary highlight for the week was its primetime demographic growth, even as it navigated shifts in broader cable network rankings. As the industry continues to adapt to changing viewing habits and political cycles, these weekly metrics offer a clear snapshot of where audiences are tuning in for news, analysis, and commentary.

Network Performance Breakdown

According to the Nielsen data for the week of October 5, Fox News averaged 1.6 million total viewers and 145,000 viewers in the coveted Adults 25-54 demographic during primetime hours. This performance represented a slight dip of 2 percent in total viewers compared to the previous week, which began on September 28. However, the network offset this minor decline with a 4 percent increase in the key demo. During total day viewing, Fox News averaged 1.07 million total viewers alongside 94,000 demo viewers, holding completely flat compared to its averages from the prior week’s measurements. Across the broader basic cable landscape, Fox News shifted from second to third place in total primetime viewership and claimed sixth place in demo viewership among all basic cable networks. In total day metrics, however, the network firmly maintained its first-place position in total viewers while securing fifth place in the total day demo.

MS NOW faced a tougher ratings cycle, finishing the week as the only major cable news network to record across-the-board declines. The network averaged 902,000 total viewers and 88,000 viewers in the A25-54 demographic during primetime. This marked a 2 percent decrease in total viewers and a 1 percent drop in the demo compared to its primetime average from the previous week. The downward trend continued into total day programming, where MS NOW averaged 570,000 total viewers and 57,000 demo viewers. These figures represented a 1 percent decline in total viewers and an 8 percent drop in the demo compared to the prior week. In the wider basic cable rankings, MS NOW slipped from third to fifth place in total primetime viewers and tied with Comedy Central for the 15th spot in the primetime demo. For total day programming, the network retained its third-place standing among total viewers and finished eighth in the total day demo.

CNN experienced a distinctly positive week, buoyed by recent high-profile news cycles and its transition under Skydance ownership. The network averaged 577,000 total primetime viewers and 100,000 demo viewers, marking a 4 percent growth in total viewers and a 3 percent increase in the demo compared to the previous week. The upward trajectory was even more pronounced during total day viewing, where CNN pulled in 393,000 total viewers and 56,000 viewers in the demo. These numbers translated to a 7 percent gain in total viewers and an 8 percent jump in the demo for that daypart, making it the only network to grow across every major category. In the broader cable rankings, CNN climbed from seventh to sixth place in total viewers and secured 11th place in the demo during primetime. During total day, CNN moved up to fifth place in total viewers and landed in the ninth position for the demo.

Top Programming and Demographic Highlights

When examining individual program performance, Fox News continued to dominate the upper tiers of cable news programming, capturing 12 of the 15 spots among the week’s most-watched cable news shows. The network’s powerhouse afternoon program, The Five, aired at 5 p.m. ET, secured the number one position overall with an impressive 2.649 million total viewers.

MS NOW managed to break through the Fox News stronghold with several notable program appearances. The Rachel Maddow Show, airing in the 9 p.m. ET hour on Monday, October 5, stood out as the most-watched show in total viewers for that evening, pulling in 1.779 million total viewers and landing at No. 6 overall for the week. Additionally, MS NOW’s weekday lineup featured strong entries from The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, which airs weeknights at 10 p.m. ET and secured the No. 14 spot with 1.122 million total viewers, and The Briefing with Jen Psaki, airing Tuesday through Friday at 9 p.m., which claimed the No. 15 position with 1.078 million total viewers. Early in the morning, MS NOW also dominated the 6 a.m. ET hour when Morning Joe aired on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, making it the most-watched network in both measured categories for that time slot.

In the highly competitive Adults 25-54 demographic, programming shifts altered the traditional hierarchy. The Rachel Maddow Show successfully dethroned The Five to capture the top spot in the demo for the week, drawing 252,000 viewers in the key age bracket. Despite this standout performance by MS NOW, Fox News maintained its overall dominance by securing 12 of the top 15 spots in the demo rankings. The Five remained a powerhouse in the category as well, averaging 239,000 demo viewers to secure the second-place position.

CNN also secured valuable real estate on the demographic chart, driven by its primetime and late-night lineup. CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip, which airs five nights a week at 10 p.m. ET, finished in eighth place with 144,000 demo viewers. Meanwhile, The Source with Kaitlan Collins, airing weeknights at 9 p.m. ET, claimed the 14th position with 116,000 demo viewers, further reflecting CNN’s ability to capture key adult audiences during its evening programming blocks.
