From Viral Owl to Animated Star: Duolingo Launches ‘Duo TV’ in Bold Move Toward Multi-Platform Entertainment

Duo the green owl has packed a lot of mileage into his chaotic digital life. Over the last few years, the famous mascot has twerked on main, flash-mobbed a Charli XCX concert, dramatically “died” on social media, shipped his simulated ashes to pop star Dua Lipa, and miraculously risen from the dead. Now, the internet-famous bird is preparing for his next big act: headlining his own animated television series.

Duo TV is a brand-new animated series created entirely by Duolingo’s in-house design studio. The six-episode production brings together a familiar cast of in-app characters, including Duo himself, the famously deadpan goth teen Lily, her energetic best friend Zari, and a perpetually grumpy bear named Falstaff. In the series, these beloved personalities navigate the surreal daily reality of working at a mysterious grocery store known as DuoMart.

The rollout for the project begins with the release of the first two episodes on October 12, which will be published directly to Duolingo’s official YouTube channel and Instagram page. Following the premiere, a new episode will be released daily until the series reaches its dramatic finale. For the language-learning platform, the venture represents a major step forward in a broader strategic mission to deepen the emotional connection between its massive global fan base and its distinctive stable of characters.

Duo and his motley crew first broke out into the broader cultural zeitgeist during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when consumers sought levity, the brand’s uniquely irreverent, unhinged social media presence helped it amass an astronomical following across multiple digital platforms. In the years since that initial viral explosion, Duolingo has continuously upped the ante, heavily investing in its characters and internal design team to keep users amused, engaged, and coming back to the application day after day.

Miguel Reyes, Duolingo’s head of design, explains that the company is looking far beyond immediate metrics when planning its creative output. “We tell everyone right from the get-go, we want to be a hundred-year business,” Reyes notes.

Achieving that kind of generational longevity, leadership believes, will require building a brand ecosystem that transcends the traditional boundaries of an Android or iOS application. By constructing an entire narrative universe around its characters through efforts like Duo TV—effectively morphing into its own entertainment arm—Duolingo is actively engineering a playbook designed to secure decades of future business growth.

Duolingo Bets Big on Character Lore

Duolingo has long stood as the envy of marketers worldwide for its extraordinarily beloved mascot and supporting cast. These characters serve a dual purpose within the company’s operational architecture, acting simultaneously as the engine of the brand’s organic marketing flywheel and as friendly, familiar guides through the app’s various educational features.

The financial value of this intellectual property is staggering. In 2024, Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn publicly estimated the owl’s intrinsic brand value at "hundreds of millions of dollars," noting that roughly 15% of all new app users discover the platform organically through social media channels. Today, Duo commands a colossal digital audience, boasting 5.3 million followers on Instagram, 6.94 million subscribers on YouTube, and an astonishing 18.2 million followers on TikTok. Katherine Chan, Duolingo’s senior director of brand marketing, articulated the company’s grand ambitions to Fast Company in late 2024, stating that the ultimate goal is to make Duo “more famous than Mickey Mouse.”

While these characters excel as top-of-funnel marketing tools designed to capture public attention, Duolingo has increasingly integrated them directly into the core learning experience. Lily, for instance, serves as the distinct personality and voice behind the brand’s recently introduced AI-powered speaking function, Video Call. Other characters, such as Lucy, Bea, and Zari, regularly guide users through interactive mini-podcasts on DuoRadio, transforming passive listening into an engaging, narrative-driven exercise.

Even Duo himself has been leveraged to drive unprecedented spikes in in-app engagement. In one particularly memorable marketing stunt, the company temporarily replaced its normally chipper app icon with a graphic depicting a "dead Duo," prompting widespread panic and amusement across the internet before the mascot eventually made his triumphant return to the land of the living. With the arrival of Duo TV, Duolingo is proving that its characters are no longer just mascots helping people learn foreign languages, but fully realized entertainment properties ready to take on the world.
