With misty mornings settling in and trees across the Northern Hemisphere shifting into brilliant hues of red, yellow, and orange, October brings a distinct visual transformation. Marking the arrival of autumn and the upcoming Halloween season, Smashing Magazine has released its latest monthly desktop wallpaper collection. Continuing a community tradition that has spanned more than 15 years, the platform has published a diverse selection of artwork contributed by digital artists, illustrators, and design studios from around the globe.
The collection offers wallpapers tailored for various screen resolutions, available to the public as free downloads. Designed by independent creators, the works reflect a broad spectrum of seasonal themes—ranging from cozy autumnal landscapes and nostalgic childhood memories to spooky Halloween imagery and sci-fi narrative illustrations. Beyond showcasing artistic talent, the monthly release serves as an ongoing open forum for global creative collaboration, with an open invitation for artists to submit their work for upcoming editions.

A Night Of Universal Magic And Joy
Designed by PopArt Studio, a creative agency based in Novi Sad, Serbia, this piece reflects on the international reach of Halloween festivities. The designers describe the holiday as a cross-cultural celebration that connects communities across various regions.
"From candlelit streets in Europe to vibrant festivals across the Americas, Halloween has become a global celebration that unites people of all ages," PopArt Studio stated regarding the concept. "It is a magical night where children step into the shoes of their favorite heroes for candy-filled adventures, while adults rediscover the pure, playful excitement of childhood. Across cultures and continents, glowing pumpkins and festive costumes light up the autumn dark, bringing neighbors together, sparking laughter, and proving that joy knows no age limit."

Voodoo You
Created by Spanish artist and designer Ricardo Gimenes, Voodoo You brings a playful yet eerie visual aesthetic to the collection. Gimenes, a frequent contributor to the monthly wallpaper series, utilizes character design to capture the quirky side of the spooky season.
Hanging
Also designed by Ricardo Gimenes from Spain, Hanging continues the artist’s exploration of Halloween-themed visuals. The composition provides an atmospheric, dark-toned background suited for desktop setups looking to embrace the October mood.

Under The Floodlights
Designed by the Serbian creative outfit Football Charts, Under The Floodlights captures the distinct atmosphere of autumn sports. The geometric illustration depicts a serene stadium scene set against a darkening fall sky.
"October football begins under the lights," the creators explained. "This geometric illustration captures the quiet moment before kickoff: an empty pitch, warm floodlights, and a dark autumn sky. A few fallen leaves hint at the season, while the open composition leaves room for the everyday things on your desktop."

Coffee Weather
Created by Ginger IT Solutions, a design team based in Serbia, Coffee Weather focuses on the cozy, everyday rituals associated with the fall season. The artwork highlights the simple pleasure of warm beverages on brisk autumn days.
"October is here, which means colder mornings, warmer clothes, and coffee that somehow tastes better outside," the studio noted. "A small autumn scene for one of the coziest months of the year."

Midnight Mischief
Contributed by Serbian agency Libra Fire, Midnight Mischief explores nocturnal autumn themes through a stylized digital illustration, adding to the month’s collection of darker, Halloween-inspired graphics.
Magical October
Hungarian illustrator Lívia Lénárt contributed Magical October, incorporating literary inspiration into her design. The artwork features a classic quote from L.M. Montgomery’s timeless novel Anne of Green Gables: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” The design visualizes the emotional warmth and nostalgic imagery described in Montgomery’s prose.

The Night Drive
Designed by Georgian illustrator and artist Vlad Gerasimov, The Night Drive presents a moody, atmospheric perspective on autumnal travel. Gerasimov’s work uses rich color palettes to evoke the solitary experience of driving through dark, fall landscapes.
Bird Migration Portal
Belgian designer Eline Claeys draws on personal childhood memories for Bird Migration Portal, an illustration focused on the annual movement of migratory birds during early autumn.

"When I was young, I had a bird’s nest not so far from my room window," Claeys shared. "I watched the birds almost every day, because those swallows always left their nests in October. As a child, I dreamt that they all flew together to a nicer place, where they were not so cold."
The Crow And The Ghosts
Marking her second contribution to the October set, Hungarian artist Lívia Lénárt presents The Crow And The Ghosts. Accompanying the piece is a brief reflection on the emotional resonance of the fall season: “If my heart were a season, it would be autumn.” The illustration blends soft ghost imagery with autumn wildlife elements.

Spooky Town
Designed by German illustrator Xenia Latii, Spooky Town offers a detailed architectural illustration of a haunted urban environment. The artwork uses rich color palettes and atmospheric lighting to build an immersive seasonal backdrop.
Hanlu
Taiwanese designer Hong, ZI-Qing brings cultural traditions to the collection with Hanlu, a piece centered around the traditional East Asian solar term representing the period of "Cold Dew."

“The term ‘Hanlu’ literally translates as ‘Cold Dew,’” Hong explained. “The cold dew brings brisk mornings and evenings. Eventually the briskness will turn cold, as winter is coming soon. And chrysanthemum is the iconic flower of Cold Dew.”
Ghostbusters
Spanish designer Ricardo Gimenes returns with Ghostbusters, a humorous homage to classic supernatural themes. The design integrates vibrant graphic elements tailored for desktop screens during the Halloween season.

Hello Autumn
Belgian illustrator Erin Troch focuses on wildlife habits during the fall harvest for her piece Hello Autumn. The illustration depicts a squirrel surrounded by seasonal fruits.
"Did you know that squirrels don’t just eat nuts? They really like to eat fruit, too," Troch noted. "Since apples are the seasonal fruit of October, I decided to combine both things into a beautiful image."

Transitions
Belgian designer Jelle Denturck explores abstract composition in Transitions, utilizing smooth gradients to represent the natural seasonal shift.
"To me, October is a transitional month," Denturck explained. "We gradually slide from summer to autumn. That’s why I chose to use a lot of gradients. I also wanted to work with simple shapes, because I think of October as the ‘back to nature/back to basics month’."

AI
Ricardo Gimenes provides another distinct contribution titled AI, merging technology concepts with dark, stylized illustrative themes suited for modern desktop backgrounds.
First Scarf And The Beach
Gwen Bogaert, an illustrator from Belgium, highlights a specific regional tradition in First Scarf And The Beach, set along the North Sea coastline.

"When I was little, my parents always took me and my sister for a walk at the beach in Nieuwpoort," Bogaert recalled. "We didn’t really do those beach walks in the summer but always when the sky started to turn gray and the days became colder. My sister and I always took out our warmest scarfs and played in the sand while my parents walked behind us. I really loved those Saturday or Sunday mornings where we were all together. I think October (when it’s not raining) is the perfect month to go to the beach for ‘uitwaaien’ (to blow out), to walk in the wind and take a break and clear your head, relieve the stress or forget one’s problems."
Shades Of Gold
Created by PopArt Studio in Serbia, Shades Of Gold focuses on the striking visual shift in natural landscapes as trees change color across mountain ranges.

"We are about to experience the magical imagery of nature, with all the yellows, ochers, oranges, and reds coming our way this fall," the studio stated. "With all the subtle sunrises and the burning sunsets before us, we feel so joyful that we are going to shout it out to the world from the top of the mountains."
Tea And Cookies
Romanian designer Miruna Sfia captures the indoor comfort of cold weather in Tea And Cookies, focusing on cozy domestic scenes.

“As it gets colder outside, all I want to do is stay inside with a big pot of tea, eat cookies, and read or watch a movie, wrapped in a blanket,” Sfia remarked regarding the inspiration behind the illustration.
Autumn Deer
Canadian artist Amy Hamilton offers a quiet portrait of northern wildlife with Autumn Deer. Hamilton’s delicate visual style highlights the grace of woodland animals amidst falling leaves.

Discovering The Universe
Spanish designer Verónica Valenzuela brings an element of curiosity and wonder to the collection with Discovering The Universe, an artwork centered around stargazing during clear autumn nights.
“Autumn is the best moment for discovering the universe,” Valenzuela shared. “I am looking for a new galaxy or maybe… a UFO!”

King Of The Pirates
Adding to his expansive lineup for the month, Spanish designer Ricardo Gimenes presents King Of The Pirates, a character illustration that brings a playful nautical twist to the October selection.
Autumn In The Forest
Swedish designer Hilda Rytteke captures the peaceful routines of Northern Europe in Autumn In The Forest, an illustration dedicated to woodland strolls during peak leaf season. “Autumn is a wonderful time to go for walks in the forest!” Rytteke commented.

Autumn Gate
Designed by Belgrade-based artist Ana Masnikosa, Autumn Gate reflects on the shifting structures of nature as leaves fall and reveal bare branches and landscapes.
“The days are colder, but the colors are warmer, and with every step we go further, new earthly architecture reveals itself, making the best of winter’s dawn,” Masnikosa noted.

Game Night And Hot Chocolate
Belgian illustrator Lieselot Geirnaert emphasizes social gatherings in Game Night And Hot Chocolate, highlighting how colder weather brings people indoors.
"To me, October is all about cozy evenings with hot chocolate, freshly baked cookies, and a game night with friends or family," Geirnaert explained.

A Very Pug-o-ween
Design studio Trillion, based in Summit, New Jersey, brings comedic relief to the roundup with A Very Pug-o-ween, focusing on pet costumes.
“The best part of October is undoubtedly Halloween,” the team at Trillion expressed. “And the best part of Halloween is dog owners who never pass up an o-paw-tunity to dress up their pups as something a-dog-able. Why design pugs specifically in costumes? Because no matter how you look at it, pugs are cute in whatever costume you put them in for trick or treating. There’s something about their wrinkly snorting snoots that makes us giggle, and we hope our backgrounds make you smile all month.”

Roger That Rogue Rover
American designer Frank Candamil presents a narrative-driven sci-fi illustration titled Roger That Rogue Rover, combining space exploration with horror tropes.
“The story is a mash-up of retro science fiction and zombie infection,” Candamil described. “What would happen if a Mars rover came into contact with an unknown Martian material and got infected with a virus? What if it reversed its intended purpose of research and exploration, instead choosing a life of chaos and evil? What if they all ran rogue on Mars? Would humans ever dare to voyage to the red planet?”

Halloween 2040
Ricardo Gimenes projects seasonal celebrations into the future with Halloween 2040, combining futuristic design elements with traditional holiday themes.
Dope Code
Polish designer Robert Brodziak captures the reality of rainy autumn days for digital creators in Dope Code, emphasizing indoor productivity.

“October is the month when the weather in Poland starts to get colder, and it gets very rainy, too,” Brodziak observed. “You can’t always spend your free time outside, so it’s the perfect opportunity to get some hot coffee and work on your next cool web project!”
Happy Fall!
Rounding out the artistic contributions, American designer Thuy Truong presents Happy Fall!, a colorful visual expression celebrating autumn warmth and vibrant fall foliage.
