Acclaimed, three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell is slated to serve as the guest of honor and present this year’s prestigious Film London Jarman Award. The high-profile ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 24, celebrating the pinnacle of U.K.-based artist-filmmaking and recognizing groundbreaking independent cinematic talent.
Powell’s involvement with the event carries profound personal and professional significance. Earlier in her illustrious career, she frequently collaborated with and was mentored by the visionary filmmaker Derek Jarman, in whose honor the award was established back in 2008. The annual accolade continues to champion bold, experimental, and innovative U.K.-based artist-filmmakers who are pushing the boundaries of the traditional film industry.
Throughout her decades-spanning career, Powell has cemented her status as one of the most versatile and respected designers in global cinema. In addition to her foundational work with Jarman, she has collaborated extensively with some of the most celebrated auteurs in film history, including Martin Scorsese, Neil Jordan, Todd Haynes, and Yorgos Lanthimos, translating distinct historical periods and fantastical realms into unforgettable visual masterpieces on screen.
Adrian Wootton, OBE, the chief executive of Film London, expressed immense enthusiasm for Powell’s participation in this year’s event, highlighting her enduring artistic footprint and her deep connection to the award’s namesake.
“Sandy’s remarkable career speaks to a truly remarkable talent. From her days collaborating with Derek Jarman on films like ‘Caravaggio’ and ‘Edward II’ to the peerless design she has brought to a staggering array of modern classics, her work is bold, beautiful and boundlessly creative,” Wootton said. “She has long been vocal in her support of Derek’s cultural legacy, and, as such, I don’t think we could ask for a more fitting guest of honor for this year’s Film London Jarman Award.”
Powell’s phenomenal portfolio features dazzling costume work across a wide spectrum of cinematic genres, ranging from gritty historical dramas to lavish fantasy blockbusters and contemporary narratives. Her remarkable credits include her intricate work on Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” Martin Scorsese’s gritty financial drama “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and the enchanting musical sequel “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Her peerless contributions to the craft have been recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on numerous occasions. Powell has claimed the coveted Academy Award for Best Costume Design three times, earning the golden statuette for her exquisite work on John Madden’s romantic comedy-drama “Shakespeare in Love,” Martin Scorsese’s sweeping Howard Hughes biopic “The Aviator,” and Jean-Marc Vallée’s royal historical drama “The Young Victoria.”
As the anticipation builds for the November 24 ceremony, Film London has also officially announced the shortlist of exceptional creative talents contending for this year’s Jarman Award. The 2024 nominees vying for the esteemed prize are Sadia Pineda Hameed, Ilona Sagar, Rhea Storr, and Alia Syed, each representing the vibrant, diverse future of U.K. artist-moving-image production.
