Sonoma-Based Hommeboys Interiors Overhauls a 6,000-Square-Foot Silicon Valley Haven in Los Altos Hills

Nestled within the dense woodlands and rolling hills of Los Altos Hills, California, lies an exclusive semi-rural enclave renowned for its stunning panoramic views and tranquil atmosphere. Located just a short commute away from the heart of Silicon Valley, the neighborhood serves as a private, secluded haven for leaders and professionals within the tech industry. It is within this privileged landscape that Sonoma-based architecture and interior design firm Hommeboys Interiors has recently completed a sweeping, comprehensive overhaul of a 6,000-square-foot residence for a young tech-industry couple and their children.

Founded by design partners Alex Mutter-Rottmayer and Austin Carrier, Hommeboys Interiors has built a stellar reputation for its inherent talent in dissolving the traditional barriers between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The firm is widely recognized for crafting deeply layered, highly textural interiors that place a heavy emphasis on organic materials while maintaining a sleek, modern sensibility. For the homeowners, who set out with the explicit goal of creating a family residence that felt "grand without feeling cold," Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier emerged as a natural and intuitive choice to bring their vision to life.

The project began as a complete gut remodel that reimagined the sprawling 6,000-square-foot property both inside and out. Recognizing the need to anchor the home more harmoniously within its breathtaking natural surroundings, the design team reworked the exterior shell entirely. Now elegantly clad in a combination of rich stone and natural timber, the modified structure features a striking architectural update at the rear of the home: an expansive gable window wall. This soaring glass installation was purposefully engineered to capture sweeping outdoor vistas while allowing abundant natural light to penetrate deep into the home’s interior core.

Once inside the newly transformed residence, the deliberate and continuous connection to the natural world becomes immediately apparent through a carefully curated material palette. Wood and stone once again play foundational roles throughout the interior architecture, cladding most surfaces to impart a profound sense of warmth, tactility, and grounding. Richly grained oak paneling lines walls and ceilings across the home, featuring a prominent character that gracefully catches and diffuses daylight, ultimately fostering an exceptionally inviting and welcoming atmosphere for daily family life.

Balancing the rustic warmth of the wood, natural stone walls throughout the residence impart a subdued, earthy ruggedness. This organic texture is thoughtfully countered and elevated by the introduction of more refined, luxurious materials, including dramatically veined marbles, smooth hand-applied plaster, and sleek patinated steel accents. These contrasting elements work in tandem to establish a sophisticated visual dialogue that feels simultaneously curated, comfortable, and deeply connected to the California landscape just beyond the glass.

Special design attention was lavished upon the home’s three distinct fireplaces, each serving to anchor a major gathering space with sculptural presence. In the main living room, an angular, plaster-clad fireplace was conceived by the designers to function as the undeniable showpiece of the room—a functional piece of art. According to the designers, this sculptural hearth sets the refined yet approachable tone for the entire room, and its subtle curves directly inspired the contours of much of the surrounding custom furniture.

The furniture selection throughout the living spaces features a number of tactile pieces sourced directly from the designers’ own proprietary line, Haus of Hommeboys. These bespoke items include hide- and velvet-covered poufs alongside sculptural, castellated planters that add unique architectural interest to the corners of the room. To complement their own creations, Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier sourced timeless design classics through their atelier, featuring standout statement pieces such as a vintage Julep sofa designed by Tacchini and a sophisticated Raymonde Leduc coffee table.

Transitioning to the family room, the atmosphere shifts slightly through the use of hand-patinated Corten steel panels that cover the entire fireplace wall, bathing the space in a warm, moody, and intimate ambiance. The designers note their enduring passion for experimenting with unexpected materiality, pointing out that the junction where the heavy steel fireplace meets the smooth plaster walls creates a captivating interplay of both symmetry and visual tension. Meanwhile, the third fireplace, located privately within the primary bedroom suite, is finished in a similar hand-applied plaster featuring a distinct linear texture that generates a bold, artistic contrast against the otherwise serene and restful interior.

At the literal and figurative heart of the home lies the kitchen, a space that perfectly exemplifies Hommeboys Interiors’ unique ability to manipulate natural materials and textures in innovative and unexpected ways. Surrounded by rich oak paneling, striking Calacatta Monet marble, and grounding natural stone, the kitchen is designed to be open, highly functional, and deeply inviting. It serves as the ultimate hub for the young family to spend quality time together as well as host gatherings for guests, an activity the homeowners frequently enjoy. Suspended above the space is a spectacular, 15-foot-long custom-designed lighting fixture crafted by Ovature Studio, which defines the room’s proportions and provides a sharp, graphic counterpoint to the abundant organic materials below.

Reflecting on the overarching design philosophy behind the ambitious Los Altos Hills project, the designers emphasize a commitment to creating spaces that honor their environment without sacrificing modern livability. "The house is definitely modern, but we leaned into natural materials to add an organic, timeless quality that felt warm and inviting, not fixed and sterile," Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier explained. Approachable, sophisticated, and continuously flooded with the brilliant natural light characteristic of Northern California, the meticulously renovated residence now stands as the perfect, harmonious foil for the vibrant family life that unfolds within its walls.
