Global entertainment powerhouse Beta Film has successfully closed significant international agreements for two of its most anticipated female-led drama highlights: the royal historical romance series “Queen Silvia” and the vibrant upcoming coming-of-age drama “La Vida Barcelona.” The high-profile sales underscore the growing global market demand for premium, character-driven storytelling helmed by dynamic female protagonists and supported by robust international broadcasting partnerships.
Ahead of its high-profile world premiere in the Grand Auditorium at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT has locked down the Swedish second-window rights for “Queen Silvia,” following Prime Video. Meanwhile, German public broadcaster ZDF has officially boarded “La Vida Barcelona” as a key co-production partner, joining forces with Beta Film and prominent Dutch production outfit Millstreet Films to bring the sun-drenched Spanish-set series to life.
Royal Romance and Diplomatic Duty: Inside ‘Queen Silvia’
Produced by Germany’s Pyjama Pictures and Sweden’s Unlimited Stories for Prime Video—covering German-speaking territories and the Nordics—alongside German broadcaster Sat.1, “Queen Silvia” explores one of modern Europe’s most recognizable and enduring royal love stories. The series dramatizes the captivating romance between German-Brazilian interpreter Silvia Sommerlath and the then-Swedish Crown Prince Carl Gustaf.
The relationship blossomed from an unexpected, chance encounter at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, ultimately changing the course of Swedish modern history. The ambitious dramatic narrative traces the couple as they navigate their lives across multiple cultural hubs, traveling between Munich, Stockholm, and the glamorous Côte d’Azur. Along the way, the series sheds intimate light on the personal and public challenges they faced while trying to balance genuine romance with intense royal duty and personal ambitions.
The royal drama features a stellar European cast. Alicia von Rittberg, widely recognized for her standout performances in “Charité,” “Becoming Elisabeth,” “Call My Agent! Berlin,” and “Miss Sophie,” takes on the titular role of Silvia Sommerlath. Opposite her, Edvin Endre—known for his compelling work in “The Playlist,” “Vikings,” and “Hammarskjöld – Fight for Peace”—steps into the shoes of Crown Prince Carl Gustaf.
Karolina Stallwood, president for acquisitions at SVT, expressed enthusiasm for the network’s latest acquisition, emphasizing the universal appeal of the historical romance.
“‘Queen Silvia’ is a romantic drama inspired by the real-life love story of Silvia Sommerlath and Crown Prince Carl Gustaf,” Stallwood stated. “Set against the backdrop of the early 1970s, the series offers a warm and engaging portrayal of their relationship and the events surrounding it. We’re very pleased to bring the series to SVT’s audience.”
Echoing this sentiment, Emil Wiklund of Sweden’s Unlimited Stories highlighted the cultural significance of adapting the monarch’s enduring partnership for the screen.
“It is a privilege to bring the love story of our King and Queen to the Swedish audience,” Wiklund said. “We hope to capture the emotional truth of a love that has endured for almost 55 years.”
Behind the camera, “Queen Silvia” is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Miguel Alexandre, whose previous credits include “Sisi,” “Gran Paradiso,” and “Shades of Happiness.” Alexandre also co-wrote the screenplay alongside head writers Lisa Hofer, known for “Black Island,” and Pauline Wolff, known for “Stockholm Requiem” and “Vaka.”
The production is guided by showrunner Carsten Kelber. Executive producers on the ambitious international project include Tina Ermuth, Frank Buchs, Carsten Kelber, Emil Wiklund, Manya Lutz-Moneim, and Justus Riesenkampff, with Pia Lüke, Tim Bahalou, and Frida Wallman serving as producers. Financial and institutional backing for the series has been provided by the German Motion Picture Fund, Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, and FilmFörderung Bayern.
The series is celebrated with its world premiere on Tuesday at the Grand Auditorium in Cannes, marking a major milestone for its international rollout.
Navigating Ambition and Identity in ‘La Vida Barcelona’
Shifting gears from royal courts to the pulsing creative heart of Spain, “La Vida Barcelona” offers a vibrant, contemporary coming-of-age story centered on ambition, identity, love, and the courage required to forge an independent path. The series comes from the producers of the hit drama series “Máxima” and benefits from the creative vision of directors associated with global hits like “Emily in Paris.”
The series features an exciting young international cast, including Priscilla Delgado of “Euphoria” and Greta Fernández of “The Walking Dead,” starring alongside lead actress Holly Mae Brood. Directing duties are shared by Katina Medina Mora, whose credits include “Emily in Paris,” “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” and “XO, Kitty,” alongside Charlotte Scott-Wilson (“Hold On”) and Ayla Spaans (“Rakhi & Peppe,” “When We Were Strangers”).
Produced by Rachel van Bommel of Millstreet Films for Videoland in the Netherlands, the narrative follows young Dutch designer Julia. Dispatched to Barcelona by her powerful and demanding mother, Julia is handed a secret mission to undermine a competing rival agency. However, the vibrant, unpredictable energy of the Catalan capital quickly upends her carefully laid plans. As she immerses herself in the city, Julia finds herself drawn into a completely new job, an entirely different lifestyle, and two unexpected, life-changing romances.
Frank Seyberth, head of co-production and international fiction at ZDF, detailed the broadcaster’s strategic decision to join the project as a co-production partner.
“We are excited to join ‘La Vida Barcelona’ as a co-production partner,” Seyberth noted. “With its relatable characters, romantic tone, the vibrant energy of Barcelona and a strong creative team, the series has all the ingredients to reach young audiences both in Germany and internationally.”
Currently deep in post-production, “La Vida Barcelona” also features performances by Martiño Rivas from “El Internado” and Agustín Della Corte from “Society of the Snow.” The scripts were penned by a writing team consisting of Emily Reekers, Jikkie Schelling, and Alix van der Goes. Nestor Hernandez serves as executive producer on behalf of Beta Film.
The production has secured support from several key European funding bodies, including the Netherlands Film Fund Production Incentive, the Spanish Tax Rebate, and the Creative Europe Media program.
With Beta Film managing international sales across the globe for both “Queen Silvia” and “La Vida Barcelona,” the distribution company continues to solidify its position as a leading force in bringing high-end European television to worldwide audiences.
