Global Citizen, the prominent international anti-poverty organization widely recognized for its high-profile, star-studded annual festivals held in iconic locations such as New York’s Central Park, is strategically shifting its outreach model. In an effort to engage younger and more digitally native demographics that traditional celebrity performers no longer reliably draw in the same capacity, the organization is turning directly to the booming world of digital content creators.
As part of this modernizing strategy, Global Citizen has officially named Influential—the major influencer marketing company owned by holding giant Publicis—as its exclusive global creator partner. The partnership was formally announced on Friday, marking a significant pivot in how the non-profit organization plans to mobilize audiences, drive social impact, and spread awareness regarding extreme poverty, climate change, and global equity.
Founded in 2013, Influential has rapidly expanded into a powerhouse within the digital marketing and creator economy ecosystem. The company experienced a monumental milestone earlier this year when it was acquired by Publicis in 2024. According to internal data provided by the company, Influential’s opt-in creator network has seen exponential growth, surging from roughly 5 million creators at the time of the Publicis acquisition to an expansive network of about 18 million creators today. By aligning with a network of this scale, Global Citizen gains immediate access to a vast, highly segmented, and deeply engaged array of digital voices capable of translating complex geopolitical and humanitarian issues into digestible, native content for millions of followers across various social media platforms.
The first major activation of this newly minted partnership is scheduled to roll out at this year’s Global Citizen Festival, taking place on Saturday. According to Chris Detert, Influential’s chief communications officer, approximately 20 prominent digital creators—including well-known internet personalities such as Ling and Lam—will be stationed on the grounds of the festival. These creators will capture live content, interview attendees and artists, and post directly from the event to their respective channels, bringing the live energy and core messaging of Global Citizen to digital feeds worldwide in real time.
This transition reflects a broader, industry-wide recognition that traditional celebrity endorsements and live concert appearances, while still culturally significant, may no longer hold a monopoly on audience attention, particularly among Gen Z and younger millennial cohorts who consume media primarily through algorithmic feeds, short-form video platforms, and niche digital communities. By integrating digital creators directly into its operational and promotional framework, Global Citizen hopes to bridge the gap between legacy advocacy models and the decentralized, creator-driven media landscape of the modern era.
The collaboration between Global Citizen and Influential represents a compelling convergence of philanthropy and cutting-edge influencer marketing. As the non-profit sector continues to navigate a rapidly fragmenting media environment, partnerships of this magnitude underscore how organizations are forced to innovate to maintain relevance and drive urgent global action. With the initial rollout centering on the festival grounds in New York, both organizations are closely watching how digital audiences respond to this creator-first approach, setting the stage for what could become a long-term blueprint for mobilizing advocacy in the digital age.
