Netflix has appointed industry veteran Darshan Kantak as its new vice president of its ads platform, bringing in a seasoned technology leader to spearhead the continued development of the streaming giant’s advertising ecosystem as it navigates a transitional period marked by strategic updates, revenue adjustments, and internal restructuring.
In his new role at the streaming service, Kantak will lead the specialized engineering, product, and data insights teams responsible for building the foundational advertising experience on the platform. He will also oversee the operational tools and reporting systems utilized by Netflix Ads Suite partners, playing a pivotal part in shaping how brands interact with the streaming service’s rapidly growing subscriber base.
Reporting directly to Amy Reinhard, president of advertising, Kantak will hold oversight of the advertising product, engineering, and data insights teams that are actively developing strategic ad platform initiatives for Netflix on a global scale. His mandate involves ensuring that the technical infrastructure underpinning the company’s ad-supported tier remains robust, innovative, and attractive to major media buyers and brand partners.
"What drew me to Netflix is the chance to use that technology to build impactful solutions," Kantak said in a statement regarding his appointment. These solutions, he noted, include "ads that feel relevant and welcome for members, and technical tools that make advertising even more innovative and effective. I look forward to building that with the team."
Kantak arrives at Netflix with a deeply established track record in product leadership across some of the world’s most prominent technology and social media companies. He most recently served as the vice president of product at Google Cloud’s Applied AI division, where he gained extensive experience in leveraging advanced artificial intelligence tools and operations. Prior to his tenure at Google, Kantak held significant product and engineering roles at prominent technology firms including Snap Inc., Meta, Microsoft, and Yahoo, accumulating a wealth of expertise in scaling complex technical platforms and data systems.
Amy Reinhard expressed enthusiasm for the new leadership addition, emphasizing how Kantak’s specialized background aligns with the company’s commercial objectives for its advertising division. "Darshan’s expertise spans from innovative technical skills to unique AI tooling and operations, all of which I’m excited for him to bring to the Netflix ads business," Reinhard said.
Kantak’s arrival coincides with a particularly dynamic period for the streaming pioneer as it works to refine and expand its advertising capabilities. Just last month, the company’s proprietary in-house ad platform announced major updates designed to enhance its market appeal. These updates included the introduction of advanced measurement capabilities and an expanded programmatic offering, intended to give advertisers greater flexibility, transparency, and precision when buying inventory on the service.
These rolling updates to the Netflix Ads Suite arrive against the backdrop of ambitious financial projections. Initially, the streamer had anticipated doubling its advertising revenue for the second consecutive year, a milestone that would have underscored the rapid commercial success of its ad-supported tier since its inception. However, during its third-quarter earnings call last month, Netflix executives adjusted those expectations, revealing that the company was lowering its projected ad revenue target to $2.7 billion. Management attributed the adjustment to a slightly slower-than-expected rollout of certain advanced ad product capabilities, highlighting the complex technical hurdles involved in scaling a global advertising business from the ground up.
The leadership appointment and ongoing product adjustments also follow a broader wave of organizational and personnel changes across the company. Over the past month, Netflix has experienced significant shifts within its executive ranks. Notably, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria departed the company and was succeeded by Peter Rice, a seasoned media executive who previously held high-profile leadership roles at both Disney and Fox.
In addition to executive-level changes, the media company implemented significant workforce reductions earlier this month, laying off approximately 6% of its total staff, which equates to roughly 1,000 employees. The downsizing touched various departments across the organization as the company recalibrates its operational structure to match shifting market realities and long-term strategic priorities.
The recent departures have extended across multiple creative and operational divisions within the company. Other prominent executive departures include film chief Dan Lin, along with television executives Lisa Lang McMullen, James Oh, Carolina Garcia, and Andrew McQuinn. Additionally, Doug Belgrad, who served as Netflix’s film vice president, also exited the organization during this period of extensive internal reorganization.
As Kantak steps into his new role, his primary focus will be on smoothing out the technical rollout of ad products, enhancing the reliability and depth of reporting tools for advertising partners, and ensuring that the platform’s technological infrastructure can support the company’s long-term commercial ambitions. By bridging advanced AI capabilities with operational execution, his leadership will be central to how Netflix addresses the technological bottlenecks that previously impacted its advertising rollout, positioning the streaming service to better compete in the evolving digital advertising landscape.
