16th-Century Palazzo Becomes Flagship for Massimo Dutti in Rome

Spanish fashion brand Massimo Dutti has officially opened its sprawling new flagship store inside the historic Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome. Spanning more than 2,000 square meters—equivalent to approximately 21,527 square feet—along the bustling Via del Corso, the retail design successfully showcases contemporary fashion collections within a magnificent 16th-century architectural setting. The ambitious project bridges historical preservation and modern commercial design, pairing the palace’s original features, such as soaring vaulted ceilings and a grand palatial staircase, with contemporary wooden furniture, large-format rugs, and lightweight display systems tailored for luxury apparel.

Preserving Historic Rome Palace Vaults and Arches

Visitors begin their journey into Massimo Dutti’s flagship by ascending a wide stone staircase that opens directly into a continuous sequence of majestic arched rooms. Following an exhaustive heritage study and meticulous restoration work executed by specialized artisans, the original 16th-century finishes and masonry remain proudly visible throughout the interior.

To honor the historical integrity of the architecture without compromising modern visual merchandising needs, indirect lighting has been carefully installed at the base of the structural vaults. This subtle illumination technique accentuates the rhythmic beauty of the arches, casting a warm glow that highlights the ancient stonework rather than obscuring it. The fashion brand deliberately chose a restrained material palette dominated by warm wood and tactile fabrics for its understated sofas and minimalist display units. As visitors approach the checkout area, the interior atmosphere shifts slightly as the color palette deepens and tall, imposing bookshelves line the perimeter walls to enclose and ground the space.

Adding a distinct local and cultural dimension to the retail experience, the flagship hosts a temporary olfactory archive developed in collaboration with Florentine perfumery Profumoir. Customers can sample the artisanal perfumery’s primary fragrance notes presented in bespoke, flame-worked glass holders crafted by Barcelona-based experimental artist Pia Glasswork. Furthermore, independent Roman bookshop Leporello Books has curated a dedicated library featuring nearly 100 titles dedicated to art and architecture. Adding an intimate, personal touch to the literary collection, 20 of these selected volumes feature handwritten notes penned directly by the bookshop’s founder.

The garments focus heavily on sophisticated tailoring, offering shoppers a refined selection of structured jackets, impeccably cut wide-leg trousers, and sweeping long coats. The collection explores rich textural contrasts, effortlessly pairing supple leather with cozy knitwear and diaphanous, lightweight fabrics. This sartorial narrative is framed by a sophisticated, earthy color palette comprised of deep black, rich chocolate, versatile gray, taupe, classic camel, and soft stone.

Beyond the physical garments and architectural marvels, the flagship is equipped with a suite of advanced digital services designed to streamline the luxury shopping experience. These include a dedicated concierge service capable of coordinating delayed collections or direct deliveries to local hotels, alongside mobile inventory devices carried by store staff to ensure immediate assistance. For digital shoppers, online orders can be prepared for rapid in-store pickup in under two hours.

The brand’s integration with Roman culture extends well beyond the physical boundaries of the storefront. Massimo Dutti has partnered with Caffè Doria to serve signature coffee inside the flagship while concurrently setting up a temporary architectural installation in the nearby courtyard of the historic Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, effectively weaving the retail brand into the cultural fabric of the Italian capital.
