Coinbase’s Video Game-Inspired Campaign Dominates at the 2026 D&AD Awards with Two Black Pencils

LONDON — In the fiercely competitive landscape of global advertising, few accolades carry the weight and prestige of a D&AD Black Pencil. Reserved exclusively for work that is considered truly groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting, and revolutionary within its respective field, these top-tier prizes are notoriously difficult to secure. Out of thousands of global entries submitted this year, the D&AD organization awarded only four Black Pencils during its prestigious annual ceremony held in London.

Among the night’s biggest victors was cryptocurrency platform Coinbase, whose imaginative and visually stunning campaign set inside a virtual gaming universe captured two of the coveted Black Pencils in a single sweep. The campaign, titled “Your Way Out,” was brought to life by independent creative agency Isle of Any and made its high-profile debut during the broadcast of the 2026 Academy Awards.

Set against the sprawling backdrop of a sophisticated video game world, the commercial ingeniously turned a traditional non-player character (NPC) into a financial rebel, encouraging viewers to break away from restrictive and outdated traditional financial systems. Rather than relying solely on digital shortcuts, the creators built the ad using traditional craft, blending cutting-edge virtual aesthetics with meticulous physical production design. This dedication to craft resonated deeply with the D&AD judging panels, earning Coinbase Black Pencils in both the visual effects and production design categories.

The triumph in London extends a remarkable winning streak for “Your Way Out.” Earlier this year, the campaign also dominated the festival circuit in the south of France, where it took home the prestigious Film Craft Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in June. The consistent recognition across multiple international stages underscores the industry-wide appreciation for the campaign’s ambitious execution and its clever messaging around financial autonomy.

While Coinbase captured the spotlight with its gaming-inspired narrative, other brands and agencies also earned the organization’s highest honor for tackling complex real-world issues and disrupting traditional marketing tropes.

These Are the 4 Black Pencil Winners of the 2026 D&AD Awards

Skincare brand The Ordinary, partnering with Uncommon Creative Studio, secured a Black Pencil in the art direction category for an ambitious campaign titled “The Periodic Fable.” The project took aim at the often confusing, misleading, and harmful marketing language frequently deployed across the beauty industry. By cleverly replacing elements of the traditional periodic table with popular beauty buzzwords and marketing jargon, the campaign exposed the emptiness of much of the industry’s promotional vocabulary. This creative takedown of skincare rhetoric previously earned widespread acclaim and the Cannes Lions Health and Wellness Grand Prix earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, insurance giant AXA and creative agency Publicis Conseil took home a Black Pencil in the impact category for a deeply compassionate and life-changing initiative called “Three Words.” The project fundamentally altered traditional home insurance policies by adding vital, practical assistance for individuals attempting to escape domestic violence. By embedding social support directly into a financial and legal product, the campaign demonstrated how commercial entities can use their infrastructure to address critical societal challenges. The initiative has become a darling of the global advertising circuit, having previously won the prestigious Dan Wieden Titanium Grand Prix at Cannes Lions last year, alongside the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix at this year’s festival.

Beyond the individual Black Pencil winners, the London ceremony recognized the top-performing organizations, agencies, and creative minds that shaped the industry over the past year. D&AD named Uncommon Creative Studio London as the Advertising Agency of the Year, acknowledging its consistently high caliber of creative output. Isle of Any capped off its stellar year by being named Independent Agency of the Year, cementing its rising status in the global creative community, while Ogilvy was recognized as the Agency Network of the Year.

On the brand and client side, technology giant Apple was honored with the Brand of the Year title for its sustained excellence in product storytelling and design, while consumer goods conglomerate Unilever was named Client of the Year for its continued support of brave and effective marketing partnerships.

The evening also celebrated individual career achievement. Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom, widely celebrated across the international design community as the “queen of books” for her innovative and sculptural approaches to book design and typography, received the 2026 D&AD President’s Award. This special honor is reserved for individuals who have made an extraordinary, lasting contribution to the creative industries over the course of their careers.
