End of an Era: Karan Johar to Conclude Iconic Celebrity Chat Show ‘Koffee With Karan’ After 22 Years

After more than two decades of defining pop culture, breaking news, and sparking endless conversations across India and the global diaspora, the iconic celebrity chat show Koffee With Karan is finally coming to an end. Indian media personality, producer, and filmmaker Karan Johar has officially announced that his flagship television program will conclude its historic run with an upcoming ninth and final season.

The final chapter of the celebrated franchise is scheduled to premiere and stream exclusively on JioHotstar starting October 14. For millions of fans who have tuned in over the years to catch a glimpse of their favorite Bollywood icons letting down their guard, the announcement marks the bittersweet closing of a monumental chapter in Indian television history.

Since its television debut back in 2004, Koffee With Karan has established itself as an unmatched cultural phenomenon. Across eight completed seasons and a total of 161 episodes, the program has served as the ultimate platform where top-tier Indian cinematic talent gathered to discuss everything from deep-seated friendships and high-profile romances to unexpected breakups and high-society marriages. Many of the spontaneous remarks, witty comebacks, and candid confessions uttered on the show’s famous plush couch instantly went viral, dominating news cycles, spawning endless memes, and frequently making front-page headlines in their own right.

Reflecting on the profound impact the series has had on his personal and professional life, Karan Johar shared his heartfelt thoughts regarding the end of the road for the program.

Koffee With Karan has been such a large part of my identity in the entertainment industry,” Johar said, expressing his disbelief at the passage of time. “I still can’t believe it’s been 22 years and now this will be my ninth season.”

While hosting the celebrity-packed program has proven to be an intensely rewarding journey that connected him with audiences on a deeply personal level, Johar explained that the decision to pull the plug stems from a renewed creative ambition. The filmmaker noted that he has arrived at a definitive crossroads in his career where his primary focus must shift back to his lifelong passion for visual storytelling on the silver screen.

“I want to spend the next decade of my life directing more movies, telling many more stories, so with a heavy heart I am making this season my last,” Johar explained.

The history of Koffee With Karan is deeply intertwined with the evolution of Indian television and digital broadcasting. The show originally premiered on Star World in 2004, immediately making a massive splash by bringing cinematic royalty Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol onto the screen as its inaugural guests. The groundbreaking first season also featured legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan alongside his son, Abhishek Bachchan, and memorably paired acclaimed actress Aishwarya Rai with visionary filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Throughout its initial run, the series remained a staple of English-language television in India, successfully airing for six seasons on Star World through 2019. Its popularity necessitated creative distribution strategies, such as the second season being simultaneously simulcast on Star One in 2007 to reach a broader demographic. As digital media began to reshape the entertainment landscape, the show adapted accordingly. By its sixth season, episodes were made simultaneously available for streaming on Hotstar, which operated under the same corporate umbrella as its parent channel via Star India. Over the course of the series, certain personalities became synonymous with the couch, with stars like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kajol frequently returning as guests to match wits with the host.

The show’s immense cultural footprint also meant it occasionally navigated turbulent waters. In January 2019, an episode from Season 6 featuring national cricket stars Hardik Pandya and K.L. Rahul generated a massive public uproar following controversial remarks made by Pandya regarding women. The immense backlash prompted Hotstar to temporarily remove the episode from its streaming service. Furthermore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India intervened by issuing strict show-cause notices to both players and briefly suspending them from the national cricket team, underscoring just how far-reaching the cultural impact of a Koffee With Karan appearance could be.

The franchise’s journey through the streaming era has been equally dynamic. In 2022, social media was sent into a frenzy when Karan Johar posted a cryptic statement that initially suggested the show was permanently cancelled. However, within hours, the host clarified that the program was not ending altogether, but rather bidding farewell to traditional television to transition into a streaming exclusive format on Disney+ Hotstar. Under this new banner, production shifted to Johar’s own Dharmatic Entertainment, taking over from SOL India as the show launched its seventh season in July 2022. This momentum continued into October 2023 with the debut of Season 8, which famously opened with powerhouse pairing Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Most recently, the streaming landscape shifted again in February 2025, when Disney+ Hotstar officially merged with JioCinema to form JioHotstar, setting the stage for the upcoming final season.

As he prepares to host one final round of rapid-fire questions and intimate conversations, Johar acknowledged the emotional weight of stepping away from the iconic seating arrangement that defined an entire era of entertainment journalism and celebrity culture.

“This will be the last time I will be on a couch that has been synonymous with conversations, candor and well… controversies,” Johar said. “The decision is emotional and personal to me… But I am hoping the legacy of love the show has given me continues to brew in people’s hearts.”

Industry executives have also stepped forward to pay tribute to the monumental legacy built by the show over the past two decades. Alok Jain, head of the Hindi and English entertainment business spanning streaming, television, and studios at JioStar, emphasized the unique space Koffee With Karan carved out in the hearts of Indian television viewers.

Koffee With Karan is the talk show that brought the biggest celebrities into viewers’ living rooms and built a fandom that very few shows have matched,” Jain noted. “For over two decades, it has given audiences an intimate, irreverent and often unexpected glimpse into the lives of the people they love watching, becoming a part of pop culture phenomenon.”

Jain praised the host’s enduring commitment to delivering high-caliber entertainment and expressed enthusiasm for hosting the grand finale on the platform.

“As Karan raises the coffee mug one last time, we celebrate the extraordinary legacy of a show that has consistently delivered great content and created a lasting connection with audiences,” Jain added. “At JioHotstar, we remain committed to bringing audiences the very best in entertainment, and we are delighted to bring this final chapter of Koffee With Karan to them.”

Outside of his iconic role as a late-night talk show host, Karan Johar remains a towering figure in the Indian film industry as the head of Dharma Productions, one of Bollywood’s most successful and influential film studios. Alongside his television commitments, Johar has built an illustrious career as a filmmaker, with legendary directorial credits that include generation-defining cinematic hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and more recently, the romantic comedy-drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. With the conclusion of his legendary talk show, Johar’s renewed focus on directing promises to open an exciting new creative chapter for the celebrated filmmaker as he returns full-time to crafting stories for the big screen.
