Striking a Pose: Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards Reveals Shortlist for 2026

It turns out that humans are not the only ones obsessed with finding their best angles. In the animal kingdom, modesty is apparently a thing of the past, as demonstrated by the fabulous finalists selected for this year’s Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards. The prestigious global photography competition has officially unveiled its shortlist for the 2026 edition, showcasing a hysterical gallery of animals delivering some seriously dramatic, glamorous, and downright cheeky poses that rival any professional human model.

This year’s competition shattered all previous participation records, drawing more than 10,000 entries from photographers spanning 112 countries. Amidst stiff global competition, a select group of finalists has risen to the top, capturing moments of pure serendipity in the wild. Among the standout entries is a praying mantis from Peru executing a look of fierce, unexpected confidence, a caiman in Italy channelling the spirit of rock and roll royalty, and an Alaskan brown bear breaking a sweat during an intense morning stretching session.

The extraordinary images highlight both the incredible patience of wildlife photographers and the unintended hilarity of nature, proving that animals have a remarkable knack for performing for the camera when nobody is supposedly watching.

Capturing the Glamour of the Wild

Peruvian photographer Diego Perez found himself captivated by an insect displaying a level of poise previously thought impossible in the arthropod world. His shortlisted photograph features a praying mantis striking a strutting, highly charismatic pose that redefines what an insect can convey on camera.

Perez explained to competition organizers that his initial instinct was to capture the entire creature in a traditional frame. However, he quickly realized that standard approaches yielded results that "felt too familiar." Seeking a fresh perspective, Perez lowered his camera position and adjusted his angle, ultimately capturing the striking and somewhat sultry posture that earned the image its place among the 2026 finalists. The resulting shot, affectionately titled "Sexy Mantis," has quickly become a fan favorite for its uncanny resemblance to a high-fashion editorial spread.

Across the Atlantic in Italy, photographer Paolo Torre managed to immortalize a caiman with an unmistakable aesthetic flair. Emerging from a stretch of water heavily choked with floating vegetation, the reptile surfaced with a cluster of aquatic weeds perfectly positioned atop its head. The accidental foliage cascaded down in a manner that bore an astonishing resemblance to a classic Elvis Presley pompadour. Compounding the rock-and-roll illusion, the caiman fixed the camera with a heavy-lidded, seductive side-eye reminiscent of the King of Rock and Roll at the height of his fame. Torre’s perfectly timed shot, simply titled "Elvis," captures a moment of surreal wildlife comedy that bridges the gap between the natural world and pop culture history.

Meanwhile, US photographer Scott Suraino turned his lens toward the rugged landscapes of Alaska, where he caught a brown bear engaging in what looked suspiciously like a rigorous fitness routine. Seated comfortably on the ground with one massive arm dramatically outstretched, the bear appeared to be fully invested in a morning calisthenics session. Suraino noted that the creature looked remarkably like a "beach babe" diligently working on getting her summer body ready, offering a humorous humanization of one of North America’s most formidable apex predators.

The Competition and Prizes Ahead

Perez, Torre, and Suraino now join the ranks of an elite group of international finalists who will compete for the ultimate title of Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Beyond the sheer prestige of winning the global contest, the grand prize winner will be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime safari trip to Kenya’s renowned Maasai Mara, offering endless opportunities to capture even more extraordinary moments in the heart of the wilderness.

In addition to the African safari, the prize pool features top-tier equipment from Nikon, ensuring the winners are well-equipped for their future photographic endeavors. The prize package includes the versatile Nikon Z6 III, the compact Z50II, and the specialized Nikon ZR cinema camera, complemented by durable professional rucksacks provided by ThinkTANK.

The anticipation will culminate on Tuesday, December 8, when the overall winner, category winners, and highly commended images are officially announced during a special awards ceremony in London. Following the announcement, wildlife photography enthusiasts and members of the public will have the opportunity to view the physical prints of all the 2026 finalists during a week-long public exhibition held at London’s OXO Gallery throughout December.
