Unit Motion Design Conjures Stained Glass Masterpiece for Magic: The Gathering "Reality Fracture" Expansion

Paris-based CG and VFX studio Unit Motion Design (UMD) has unveiled a visually striking cinematic trailer for the Magic: The Gathering "Reality Fracture" expansion. Released on September 25, 2026, the ambitious piece blends the traditional texture of stained glass with complex lighting and rich narrative world-building, offering fans a fresh graphical interpretation of iconic lore.

Commissioned by Wizards of the Coast, the project centers on the compelling journey of the planeswalker Jace Beleren. According to Eva Le Bourg, head of production at UMD, the creative partnership began when Wizards of the Coast approached the studio with a unique artistic proposition: to build a cinematic film grounded entirely in the concept of mural storytelling. The core creative brief tasked the Paris studio with encapsulating Jace Beleren’s intricate personal history and evolution through a sequential series of iconic frescos, transforming familiar narrative beats into a monumental, historic visual language.

Reimagining Iconic Lore Through Glass and Lead

Bringing this vision to life presented the creative team with significant artistic and technical hurdles. The foremost challenge lay in designing the stained glass compositions themselves. UMD had to reinterpret existing—and often deeply familiar—Magic: The Gathering card artwork, adapting well-established characters and dynamic scenes to fit the strict graphic constraints and unique aesthetic of traditional stained glass lead lines.

Rather than relying on straightforward digital illustrations, the production required an extensive foundation of concept art, rigorous research and development, careful art direction, and sophisticated look development. A pivotal element of this development phase involved crafting complex shaders designed to give the virtual glass an authentic sense of physical richness, luminescence, and depth, all while preserving the visual clarity of each intricate composition.

The structural backbone of the cinematic centers on four large, highly detailed frescos, with each monumental piece representing a major chronological chapter in Jace’s overarching story arc: his forgotten past, his gradual psychological and magical evolution, his eventual rise to power and control, and the climactic, high-stakes confrontation between opposing forces.

Advanced Houdini Systems and Technical Execution

To handle the immense geometric and visual complexity of the stained-glass structures, Unit Motion Design leveraged advanced technical pipelines. Using Houdini, the studio developed a robust procedural system specifically designed to generate, fracture, and process individual glass pieces. This technical approach allowed the production team to efficiently control, manipulate, and refine the intricate patterns of the windows, ensuring that the interplay of light passing through the fractured barriers looked both physically convincing and artistically arresting.

The final production balances the delicate, traditional look of medieval architecture with the high-octane energy expected of a major modern trading card game expansion. The atmospheric richness of the visuals is further amplified by a resonant musical score composed by Sound Lab, paired with immersive sound design by YellowCab Studios led by sound designer Olivier Ranquet. Bringing an authoritative voice to the narrative, the trailer features voice-over work by veteran voice actor Nolan North.

Production Credits

The cinematic trailer was brought to life by a large international team of digital artists and production professionals. Under the creative direction of François Côme du Boistesselin and head of production Lauréline Lorion, the project’s visual framework was established through storyboards by Victorien Aubineau and concept art by Bastien Grivet, Igor Kieryluk, and Moein Kahrizi.
