Anatolii Belikov and his talented CG team have released a striking new short film paying tribute to Issey Miyake’s landmark athletic uniforms, which the legendary Japanese designer created gratis for Lithuania’s 1992 Olympic team. The project serves as a deeply personal exploration of historical memory, international solidarity, and the intersection of fashion and digital art.
The initiative, crafted by Anatolik Belikov Studio, began years ago as a straightforward fascination with an archival fashion artifact. Over time, however, it evolved into a profound reflection on connections forged across countries, people, generations, and creative disciplines. The original moment—a visionary Japanese designer volunteering his time and talent to outfit a newly independent nation breaking free from the shadow of the Soviet Union, accompanied by promotional imagery captured by master photographer Irving Penn—stood out to Belikov as a powerful example of unexpected cultural exchange.
Reconstructing an Archival Masterpiece
Bringing the project to life presented extraordinary hurdles, primarily due to a scarcity of comprehensive reference material. Because the original garments are carefully preserved within museum collections and secure archives, only a limited number of photographs and specific details were publicly accessible. Driven by a passion for the subject, the studio spent an entire year, fitting the meticulous work in between commercial commitments, to rebuild the complex garments with the highest possible degree of digital accuracy.
The developmental timeline of the short film spans years and unexpected hardships. Initially, the project was scheduled for a public release coinciding with the 2020 Olympic Games. However, those plans were delayed, and the production faced an even more profound disruption in 2022 when the team was forced to relocate following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Returning to the unfinished work years later required the creators to re-evaluate not only their technical execution and digital pipelines, but also the very reasons driving them to bring the piece to completion.
Rather than aiming for a literal, dry historical reproduction, the creators chose a more artistic path. The final approach focused on preserving the unique character, texture, and spirit of the original Issey Miyake uniforms while reinterpreting them through modern 3D animation. The protracted development period eventually became an intrinsic part of the artwork itself—functioning as a metaphor for an archival object being reconstructed, revisited, and granted an entirely new life within a contemporary medium.
