Surreal Horror FPS-RPG Divine Frequency Sets Early Access Release Date After Overcoming Tragic Setbacks

The indie gaming landscape is filled with ambitious projects, but few have captured the imagination of shooter fans quite like Divine Frequency. Built inside the classic Doom engine, this upcoming horror role-playing and first-person shooter hybrid first made waves with a terrifying and remarkably atmospheric demo. For players who experienced its unsettling blend of frantic combat and cosmic dread, the wait for a full release has been a long one. Now, after navigating a series of harrowing development hurdles, developer Abraxaes has finally announced that the game is officially slated for an Early Access launch on October 27.

The journey to this release date has been anything but straightforward. In late September, Abraxaes released a new trailer confirming the late October arrival for the surreal project. However, the path to bringing this nightmarish vision to life involved overcoming immense personal and technical obstacles that nearly derailed the entire endeavor.

Despite the tragic death of its lead writer, one of the scariest games I have ever played will finally come out later…

Chief among these heartbreaking challenges was the sudden and tragic passing of lead writer and lore-master Pablo "Artistical" Lamprea. The devastating news reached the development team around midnight on April 1, 2025—a grim irony for such a tragic event—and was later confirmed on his Discord account by his girlfriend. The loss sent shockwaves through the small team and left Abraxaes questioning whether to continue working on the game at all.

Artistical had been the vital creative spark behind the project’s intricate universe. The two collaborators frequently spent hours discussing the deep lore of the game world, including the ominous nature of the Divine Frequency itself, the apocalyptic timeline leading up to its emergence, and the concept of "psi" as the residual consciousness from another universe capable of warping the laws of reality. When creative doubts arose during the design process, Abraxaes relied heavily on Lamprea for guidance and consultation.

Beyond world-building, Lamprea authored the vast majority of the in-game dialogue, item descriptions, computer logs, and narrative notes that give the game its signature SCP-style categorization of the unknown. The timing of his passing compounded the tragedy, occurring just three weeks before the two collaborators planned to review scripts and shape the narrative for Act 2 once a stable development build was finished. Consequently, the entirety of Act 2 had to proceed without the brilliance of the hand that originally envisioned its story.

The narrative style of Divine Frequency had already won over players with its unique juxtaposition of clinical, bureaucratic classification and sweeping, majestic prose that conveyed the sheer scale of cosmic terror. For fans who spent years hoping for a full release, the continuation of Lamprea’s legacy by his collaborators stands as a testament to their shared dedication to bringing the project to fruition.

Yet, the loss of their lead writer was not the only trial the development team faced during a turbulent 2025. Technical setbacks also forced significant delays when Abraxaes discovered that several sound libraries purchased for the game contained copyrighted material. To protect the project from potential legal liabilities, the developer had to meticulously comb through every single audio file, identifying and replacing any infringing assets. This painstaking process added a substantial amount of time to the development schedule, pushing back milestones as the team worked to ensure the game met legal and quality standards.

Despite these extraordinary hurdles, the developer remained steadfast in the commitment to deliver a polished experience. Recognizing that a title gets only one chance to make a first impression, Abraxaes emphasized the necessity of a pristine launch. Rather than rushing a piecemeal product to market, the upcoming Early Access release is designed to offer a substantial portion of the overall experience. The launch build will include the first two of the three planned acts, representing approximately 70 percent of the complete game.

While the early access model is often viewed with caution by players who prefer complete narratives, the sheer volume of content planned for the initial release promises a substantial dive back into the game’s unsettling world. The development team’s perseverance through unimaginable personal loss and tedious technical revisions highlights the deep passion driving the project forward.

For enthusiasts of atmospheric horror shooters and cosmic mysteries, the long wait is finally nearing its end. Ahead of the October 27 Early Access debut, players can wishlist Divine Frequency and explore the updated demo currently available on Steam, offering a haunting preview of the nightmares that await in this meticulously crafted universe.
