Dior to Showcase the Artistic Legacy of Louis and Nicole Cane in Beverly Hills Ahead of Major Christie’s Sale

This fall, the prestigious Dior boutique in Beverly Hills is set to transform into an exclusive gallery space, showcasing the remarkable creative output of the late French artist Louis Cane and his wife, Nicole Cane.

Running from October 3 to 16, the French luxury fashion house will stage a comprehensive art exhibition dedicated to the artistic legacy of the couple. The carefully curated presentation will bring together an impressive selection of sculptures, bespoke furniture, and other decorative pieces, serving as a prominent preview ahead of a highly anticipated tribute sale scheduled for December 8 at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in New York City.

Louis Cane, who passed away in Paris earlier this year at the age of 80, stands as a defining figure of late 20th-century French art. Throughout a prolific career that spanned nearly six decades, Cane established himself as a versatile and visionary creator, working fluidly as a painter, sculptor, and furniture designer. He was notably associated with the avant-garde Supports/Surfaces movement, an influential artistic collective that emerged in France around 1969, which sought to question and radically rethink the fundamentals of painting by stripping away traditional supports like stretcher bars and frames.

In his early artistic period, Cane meticulously examined and deconstructed the traditional canvas, challenging the established boundaries of pictorial art. As his career progressed, he expanded his practice significantly into the realms of sculpture, furniture, and the decorative arts. Much of this groundbreaking body of work was developed and refined across his creative studios located in Paris and Villefranche-sur-Mer, nestled along the picturesque coast of the South of France.

The upcoming Los Angeles presentation will vividly highlight this immense creative range, showcasing works that incorporate rich, tactile materials such as bronze, marble, parchment, lacquer, and precious woods. According to information provided by Dior, these pieces are the culmination of Cane’s nearly six decades of close collaboration with skilled artisans, whose meticulous craftsmanship brought his intricate visions to life.

Among the striking works slated to go on public view in Beverly Hills are monumental bronze trees, expressive figurative pieces, and intricately detailed lanterns featuring playful monkey motifs. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view unique furniture items lavishly decorated with delicate butterflies. Dior describes Cane’s distinctive creative universe as a world that is deeply "infused with 18th-century French art, nature, fauna, humor and a deeply personal sense of wonder."

This upcoming cultural presentation follows a growing tradition of art-focused exhibitions staged by the luxury house, which frequently bridges the worlds of haute couture and fine art. In 2022, Dior mounted a major exhibition showcasing more than 20 works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne at its historic 30 Montaigne headquarters in Paris. That presentation similarly served as a precursor to a high-profile auction of the late artists’ works.

Like the memorable Lalanne exhibition, the forthcoming Cane showcase at the Beverly Hills flagship successfully unites fine art, bespoke furniture, and exquisite decorative objects within a luxury retail environment, offering collectors, enthusiasts, and the general public a rare glimpse into a distinct aesthetic world. The exhibition will remain on view at Dior Beverly Hills through October 16, offering a localized preview of the broader commemorative events leading up to the December tribute sale at Christie’s in New York.
