From Novelty to Necessity: How AI Creative Suites Are Redefining Modern Storytelling

As the advertising industry continues to navigate the profound integration of artificial intelligence into daily workflows, the debate has decisively shifted from whether generative tech should be used to how masterfully it can be wielded. This evolution took center stage during a recent fireside chat at Brandweek, where industry leaders gathered to unpack the current state of AI storytelling tools and celebrate the boundary-pushing winners of the highly anticipated Adathon competition.

Co-hosted by AI-native creative suite Higgsfield and ADWEEK, the conversation brought together Zoë Ruderman, chief content officer of ADWEEK, and Mahi de Silva, co-founder and chief strategy officer of Higgsfield. Together, they explored how generative tools have moved past their initial phase of public skepticism to become deeply embedded components of professional commercial production.

A New Language for Creators

When Higgsfield first launched roughly 17 months ago, the broader market often mischaracterized the platform as a novelty—a sentiment that mirrored the industry-wide hesitation surrounding generative video and imagery at large. However, as de Silva noted during the discussion, time and hands-on experimentation have fundamentally altered that perception. Creatives have moved past viewing AI as a mere toy and have begun recognizing it as an indispensable medium for modern expression.

"It’s not here to replace you," de Silva explained to the audience, addressing one of the most persistent anxieties plaguing creative departments worldwide. Instead, he described the technology as an entirely new language for creators, granting them the unprecedented ability to fully realize the visions trapped inside their minds without being hindered by the traditional physical constraints of cameras, complex lighting setups, remote locations, and restrictive budgets.

Today, forward-thinking advertising professionals are incorporating platforms like Higgsfield directly into their day-to-day workflows. From the earliest stages of ideation through to final production, these tools allow teams to execute projects at a fraction of both the budget and the time typically required for traditional shoots.

Rather than forcing artists to master complex prompt engineering to achieve specific visual results, de Silva likened the platform to a "booster seat" designed to help professionals jump straight into the AI game without losing their artistic focus. It serves fundamentally as a tool for enhanced expression, engineered to elevate human productivity rather than marginalize it.

Addressing lingering skepticism head-on, de Silva drew a historical parallel to put the current technological transition into perspective. He reminded the audience that thirty years ago, the creative world was locked in fierce debates regarding the legitimacy and impact of Adobe Photoshop. Today, digital editing tools are so thoroughly integrated into the creative process that nobody thinks twice about using them. Viewed through this historical lens, de Silva emphasized, artificial intelligence is simply the next logical evolution in the creator’s toolkit.

What AI Can and Can’t Do

Midway through the fireside chat, Ruderman welcomed Michael Ventura, renowned author of "Applied Empathy" and "Constellation Thinking," to the stage. Together, they introduced the results of the Adathon, a rigorous four-week competition hosted by Higgsfield in partnership with ADWEEK that challenged agency teams and brand creatives to conceptualize and produce an original commercial utilizing advanced AI tools.

The grand prize ultimately went to the team behind AI-R Studio, the specialized artificial intelligence arm of PicoLove, a creative tech agency based in Mexico City. The winning submission cleverly tackled the anxieties surrounding the medium itself. The commercial centers on a fictional commercial director who is instructed by a client to replace his AI-generated cast with "something more human," culminating in a witty and thought-provoking closing tagline: "Don’t kill the AI stars. They’re just trying to improve your video."

Ventura, who served as one of the expert judges for the competition, shared insight into the rigorous criteria used to evaluate the submissions. He noted that the judging process required looking past the initial novelty of the technology to evaluate the foundational artistic choices being made by the creators.

"I think you’ve got to look at it first from how they’re using the tool," Ventura explained. "Once you get past that, what I’m interested in is: What’s the creative idea? Where’s the discernment? Can you see that someone made a good choice going this direction vs. that direction? And is there a story here?"

According to Ventura, the submissions that successfully rose to the top of the competitive pool were those that resisted the temptation to simply flex technological muscle, opting instead to weave compelling narratives using the capabilities at their disposal. He praised the winning team from AI-R Studio for precisely this reason, highlighting the self-aware brilliance of their work. The charm of the submission, he noted, lay in the fact that the audience was immediately brought in on the joke through a sophisticated meta-narrative.

Yet, even as artificial intelligence continues to expand the boundaries of what is technically and financially possible in commercial production, de Silva was careful to delineate the hard boundaries of the medium. Concluding the discussion, he emphasized that no matter how sophisticated generative platforms become, technology will never be able to replicate the core essence of human emotion and intent.

There remains no true technological replacement for the deeply human art of storytelling, de Silva asserted. The nuance of how a story is ultimately told, the subtle emotional imagery, and the authentic voice behind the narrative are territories where artificial intelligence simply cannot tread.
