Media Industry Shake-Up: Executive Shifts, Corporate Mergers, and Network Realignments

The global media landscape is undergoing a massive transformation, marked by high-stakes corporate mergers, major executive realignments, and shifting programming strategies across television, streaming, and audio platforms. From major studio combinations to leadership battles and talent moves at top networks, the industry is experiencing a profound period of reinvention.

Leadership and Corporate Restructuring

At the center of the executive shifts is CNN head Mark Thompson, whose long-term position may finally see clarity once the landmark acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance officially closes. Current indications suggest that Thompson will remain in his role as chief executive officer of the news network. Reports indicate that Thompson recently met with David Ellison, the chief executive officer of the newly formed media conglomerate, who personally asked him to continue leading CNN into its next corporate era.

In considering whether to stay on board, Thompson has reportedly sought key assurances that CNN will maintain its journalistic independence. As the dust settles from the blockbuster acquisition, it still remains unclear precisely how CNN and CBS News will operate once they become corporate siblings under the same overarching umbrella.

During CNN’s Friday morning editorial call, Thompson chose not to directly address the reported meeting with Ellison, though he spoke candidly about his dedication to the network. "I’m very committed to CNN and would like nothing better than to lead it into this new chapter in this new company if the circumstances are right," Thompson told staffers.

Elaborating further on the continuous media speculation regarding his professional future during the 9 a.m. call, Thompson added, "I don’t want to add to the quite extensive speculation about me and my role at CNN and in the new company except really, like a cracked record, repeating what I’ve said in the past."

Meanwhile, the official name for the massive media behemoth uniting Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery was officially unveiled, confirming that the combined entity will be known simply as Skydance. Explaining the rebrand in a social media announcement, David Ellison noted that the company wanted a name that provides the combined enterprise with an independent identity while allowing Paramount, Warner Bros., and all of their extraordinary subsidiary brands to remain prominent in the cultural spotlight. Ellison stated that by combining the two century-old studios, they are equipping iconic creative hubs with a more powerful engine to serve as a creative-first home for the future.

Network Programming, Town Halls, and Digital Expansion

Beyond boardroom acquisitions, television networks are aggressively expanding their live programming, streaming catalogs, and digital initiatives. CNN is preparing to travel to Fort Worth, Texas, where it will partner with Jubilee Media to host a high-profile live town hall event. The broadcast, titled the CNN & Jubilee Town Hall, will feature Texas lawmaker James Talarico and is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, at 8 p.m. ET. Veteran CNN anchor Erin Burnett is set to moderate the live broadcast before an in-person audience composed of diverse political backgrounds, including Democrats, Republicans, and Independent voters.

In tandem with its live events, CNN continues to aggressively scale up its digital and streaming output. The network announced a brand-new streaming series titled Body Language by CNN, hosted by anchor and chief investigative correspondent Pamela Brown. Set to premiere exclusively on CNN All Access with an initial drop of four episodes, the program explores the uncomfortable, unspoken, and occasionally absurd health experiences that fundamentally shape women’s lives.

Further reinforcing its footprint in health and medical journalism, CNN announced that Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Pamela Brown will moderate the network’s inaugural Health Innovation Summit in Washington, D.C. Scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, the summit will stream live across cnn.com, the CNN mobile application, and CNN’s official YouTube channel. The event aims to convene leading voices for timely conversations regarding how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are rapidly reshaping modern healthcare while tackling some of the sector’s most pressing challenges.

Shifts at Fox Business, Fox News, and NewsNation

Rival networks are likewise shaking up their daily schedules and talent lineups. Following the high-profile departure of Maria Bartiromo, Fox Business Network is officially launching a brand-new weekday programming lineup on Monday, October 12. The schedule introduces a sprawling three-hour morning program titled Big Money in the Morning, airing at 6 a.m. ET and hosted by Dagen McDowell, Brian Brenberg, Taylor Riggs, and Josh Schafer of Barron’s.

With McDowell and Brenberg shifting to morning duties, their previous 6 p.m. ET show, The Bottom Line, will be replaced by daily encore presentations of Kudlow. Meanwhile, the noon ET program The Big Money Show is expanding its on-air team by adding a rotation of co-hosts—including Cheryl Casone, Marcus Lemonis, and Lou Basenese—who will appear alongside current host Jackie DeAngelis. Additionally, anchor Liz Claman is securing a brand-new weekly program slated for Friday nights at 7 p.m. ET, titled Claman’s Power Players.

On the Fox News side, anchor Martha MacCallum is set to moderate the latest installment of The Senate Project, an ongoing discussion series co-hosted by the Kennedy Institute and the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation. Streaming on Fox Nation and foxnews.com on Monday, October 19, this edition will feature U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Peter Welch discussing key legislative topics, including their recent bipartisan efforts to combat the negative impacts of social media on youth mental health.

In the audio space, Fox News is rolling out a brand-new podcast titled The Girls. Available across major digital distribution platforms, the program features a rotating weekly cast of co-hosts, including Rachel Campos-Duffy, Harris Faulkner, Kat Timpf, newly named Fox News contributor Melissa DeRosa, and former ESPN host Samantha Ponder, engaging in free-flowing conversations that cover a wide array of topics.

NewsNation is also expanding its footprint in the podcast ecosystem with the launch of BIFF, hosted by former college football coach Biff Poggi. The weekly program explores the increasingly prominent intersection of sports and finance, releasing comprehensive one-hour episodes every Thursday via NewsNation’s dedicated YouTube channel.

Weekend Additions and Industry Honors

At MS NOW, weekday anchor Nicolle Wallace is extending her presence onto the network’s weekend schedule through a new monthly partnership series with The 92nd Street Y, New York. Titled Nicolle Wallace Presents: 92NY on MS NOW, the program premieres on Sunday, October 4. The series is designed to deliver distinct perspectives outside the rapid churn of the daily news cycle, featuring in-depth conversations with prominent thought leaders, journalists, and policymakers.

Industry recognition has also highlighted several prominent media figures. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer and Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott were officially announced as inductees into the Broadcasting+Cable Hall of Fame class of 2026, an honor recognizing the pioneers, innovators, and television leaders who have shaped the modern broadcast industry. They are joined in the 2026 class by NBCUniversal Telemundo chairman Luis Fernandez. Additionally, CNN international correspondent Nic Robertson was named one of two recipients of the prestigious 2026 Ross Media Award for Reporting and Commentary on the Practice of American Diplomacy, presented by The American Academy of Diplomacy.

International Leadership and Talent Exchanges

Overseas, the British Broadcasting Corporation is moving through the final stages of its search for a new top news leader. According to industry reports, acting news leader Jonathan Munro, Channel 4 News editor Esme Wren, BBC director of news documentaries and long-form journalism Rachel Jupp, and Rhuanedd Richards are among the final candidates being interviewed for the influential post.

Domestic networks are also shuffling notable journalistic talent. Veteran broadcaster Harry Smith is returning to NBC News as a contributor, where he will focus on "Common Good" feature stories across Today, NBC Nightly News, and network live events. Smith previously concluded a distinguished 12-year run with NBC News in 2024.

At CBS News, executive shifts continue as Steven Baker joins the network as a consultant. Working directly alongside CBS News president Tom Cibrowski, Baker’s arrival is viewed as part of an ongoing strategic push to strengthen the viewership and production fortunes of CBS This Morning and the CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil. Baker brings extensive executive production experience to the role, having previously served as an executive producer for ABC News’ Nightline.
